Like I said before, right click your device and choose "transfer purchases." This puts all bought content on the iOS device in your iTunes library.

Anthony or Simon. It's been a while since I did a 'set up as new'. You know my 'general' thoughts on the need for all that . But I may do it this time so I can be informed about the process itself and because I never knew about the "DFU mode is a 'safer' restore for 6.1" thing.

So riddle me this: will all the icon placement I've done (hours to set up) within folders, etc - be remembered somewhere on my phone after a setup as new and then a sync apps within iTunes? Obviously NOT restoring from backup this time. And I have a bunch of email accounts that are a pain to reset up. There's a sync for that in iTunes too. If I use MAIL ACCOUNTS sync and Apps synch BEFORE the DFU restore - should everything PLUS icon positioning return after DFU restore and then a synch?

    Refresh me again? lol
Just restore your backup dude. I did. You arent experiencing any issues right?
iTunes won't remember your icon placement if you don't restore from backup btw, that and your emails you say are a pain to setup. I wouldn't bother going setup as new, unless you see some serious issues after.

Thanks, Simon. That's what I thought.
Here to help if I can. If I can't I know someone who can!

Why are you restoring? Why not just update in iTunes? Everything stays the same.

Restore replaces your entire image as opposed to update which is just a delta

    Much cleaner to restore bro!

DFU restore replaces the entire image. Regular restore just reverts all your old settings back to their factory defaults and keeps the original iOS image while replacing the user space and boot loader with new ones.

Thanks, I always forget about specifying the DFU

Don't think iTunes updates are just delta. It doesn't use a delta update file it uses the same ipsw right? Updating just doesn't wipe everything fresh

The only thing that wipes everything fresh is a DFU restore. Regular restore still leaves room for corruption problems.

If what you're saying is the case, Anthony, then even before I chose to restore from a backup, after I'd completed the non-DFU restore to 6.1 in iTunes if I'd have done set up as new iPhone, the numeric Wifi readout (from Jailbroken state) would have remained? Or was the numeric Wifi readout embedded in my iTunes backup?

It was probably still in your phone and in your backup.

That's just a setting, so it was brought back by your backup.
