IDC: iPhone Leads Market on 'Device Value'
The IDC noted Monday in a new quarterly report that Apple led the smartphone world on device value in the last quarter.
It should be pointed out, however, that "device value" doesn't speak to the typical mobile consumer's perception of "value." It simply relates to Apple selling the most high-end and highest priced devices. In the big picture, Samsung still topped Apple in terms of raw numbers related to connected devices sold.
For Q3 2012, Samsung claimed a 21.8% market share, while Apple hung tight at 15.1%.
"The battle between Samsung and Apple at the top of the smart connected device space is stronger than ever," IDC reports. "Both vendors compete at the top of the tablet and smartphone markets. However, the difference in their collective ASPs is a telling sign of different market approaches. The fact that Apple's ASP is $310 higher than Samsung's with just over 20 million fewer shipments in the quarter speaks volumes about the premium product line that Apple sells."
IDC expects shipments of connected devices to reach 362 million units (which is worth about $169.2 billion) in the fourth and final quarter of 2012.

Nothing constructive to add. Only, why such a bad picture? I'm going to stop there.
