Apple Confirms The Death of iPhone 3GS

The iPhone 3GS is officially being discontinued by Apple.
One day removed from the company's introduction of the 6th generation iPhone (the iPhone 5), Apple confirmed to the folks at All Things D today that the iPhone 3GS is being retired.
"Launched in June of 2009," says John Paczkowski, "Apple’s iPhone 3GS has had a good long run. But with the iPhone 5 set to arrive in a little over a week, that run has come to an end."
Per Apple's new plans, the iPhone 4 (the oldest model to support iOS 6) will become Apple’s new entry-level offering. The iPhone 4, as it turns out, has already replaced the iPhone 3GS in the Apple Store as the new "entry-level" iPhone.
Preorders for the new iPhone 5 will begin tomorrow. The new devices will go out for delivery on September 21st in the US, Canada, UK, Germany, France, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore.

To end the confusion here, it does support iOS 6.

no, no one said that. if you look at apple's official page, the 3gs is supported by ios 6, scroll down to the bottom. i doubt it includes most of the features though, just like it didn't get everything with ios 5.

I'm surprised that it's able to go to iOS 6 more than I am surprised to see it is discontinued. I wonder what the performance will be like. I thought for sure Apple would've left it out for this update, regardless of how well the 3GS can function on iOS 6.

3GS still has iOS 6 support, just doesn't gain all of the new features.

People give the 3gs too much grief.
If you look at the 3gs vs the 3g I'd argue it's the BIGGEST leap in specs that the iPhone ever had. I've had one for over 2 years now and it can still do almost everything the 4 and 4s can do in terms of games and things of that nature. I'll be buying a 4 or 4s off craigslist MOSTLY for the retina display and camera flash. Everything else about my 3gs I'm totally fine with. But I figure I'll give it to my sister since she's still rocking a 3g.

well i've already dropped support for non-retina from my own theme, just too much work with not enough people benefitiing, it's sad the death cycle is so short, but with technology it always is.

Who's giving the 3GS grief? It's just my opinion that it's curious that iOS 6 is supported on the 3GS. It makes sense that apple would strip some features away from it as it did before to optimize performance.
There's nothing wrong with the 3GS, it's a 3 year old phone that still runs well.
Edit: there's also a significant difference between the 3GS and 4. The jump there IMO is more significant than between the 3G and 3GS.
