4G LTE is expected to be a big part of the iPhone 5, which is expected to launch on all of the big three carriers (AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon). 4G LTE has blazing-fast download and upload speeds that blow 3G right out of the water. The only problem being that 4G LTE is sometimes hard to come by in many areas of the country. The expansion is important for Sprint because the iPhone is a very popular device that practically sells itself; if Sprint has no 4G coverage in the consumers' area, then consumers will be looking elsewhere for 4G coverage to get the most out of their new iPhone.

Sprint also states that during the process of launching 4G LTE in these new areas, 4G-capable devices on the Sprint network might start seeing 4G coverage before the network is officially announced and welcomes users to use the network early if this is the case:

Sprint plans to announce commercial availability of 4G LTE in these cities in the coming months, at which point we expect coverage, performance and reliability to get even better. Eventually, the markets will fill in until coverage largely matches the existing nationwide 3G footprint. By the end of 2013, Sprint expects to have completed the nationwide build out of the all new 3G and 4G network.
In 2013, Sprint expects to have its 4G LTE network finished and just as large as the current 3G network. All 4G LTE data will remain unlimited even past the iPhone 5 announcement and launch. Sprint is currently the only of the big three that still offers "truly unlimited data" without throttling or any data caps. For users that are eager to try out 4G LTE on an iPhone for the first time, this may be a huge selling-point.

Jeeze, The only carrier that has 4G in San Luis Obispo is Verizon. I really want sprint LTE to take advantage of the unlimited data.

I'd love it if somebody at Sprint would explain how on earth the U.S. Virgin Islands get LTE before a single city in Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, Arizona, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Nevada, Washington, or Oregon? Or how only one city in California is getting LTE (LAX)?

At this rate, I'd be rather stunned if they made their "LTE everywhere we have footprint" coverage claim by 2015, never mind the end of 2013.

Strange how my area which is over 300,000 is not on the list. I'm really glad I didn't stay with Sprint

You do understand that this list is NEW coverage areas, right?
It's not where you've been, or where you're going..
    It's where you are.
Reflect on the past, plan for the future, mod for today.
