Because they are Apple. That, and I don't know of any handset makers that use mini USB.

Get your iPhone, plug it into your car, launch Google Maps and find the nearest bridge and get over it.
I wonder if Samsung is gonna copy Apple again and change their charger connector!! LOL

Because I don't keep a George Costanza wallet. Thanks to the iPhone, I've minimized and my wallet is thinner than the phone itself.

Yeah mate and a very real one....Not exactly life ending, but a bloody piss off nonetheless. Try having both iPad and iPhone, plus all of the various household docks, mobile chargers(hmmm guess I'll be binning the Phonesuit case that I haven't even gotten to use yet as well!) around the place and contemplating the huge pain in the arse a new connector on the iPhone brings to proceedings on a daily basis. All I can say Apple better make the adaption f**king work well and be cheap.

I'm first one to say things evolve such as connectors. People making comparisons to printers changing to USB are way off. Sorry, by the time the parallel port was dropped, every PC had USB. Oh and BTW, funnily enough USB ports are still around and still a standard interface(2.0 since 2000!), plus backwards compatible how many years later- oh wait, that's right there's going to be one on the other end of the new iPhone cable!! Plus, how often do you lug a printer around with you...hmmm better grab my dot matrix got print up some invoices on the road

It's funny how you actually perceive this to be a real life problem.
Here's a thought... Don't buy the latest iPhone... Alakazam... "problem" solved!
You're acting as if you're being forced into a two cable scenario. I know Apple has good marketing but they aren't really forcing you to buy their products....are they? Are you the infamous Sheeple we hear about?

It's funny how you don't think this is going to impact the majority of existing i-Device owners, especially those with say an i-Pad and who want to upgrade to the 5. And no, not buying it isn't a solution. I should penalise myself because Apple went and decided to change connectivity for their top selling mobile device well before it's time and out of sync with the rest of their i-Device range?? Sheeple, hardly mate. I pretty much can't stand Mac hardware, as I find it for those who aren't that tech savvy and led by the nose with computers(no offence to those who do who use final cut/photoshop etc). I build PC's, even run OSX 10.8 for sh*ts and giggles, cause I can- but don't spend much time in it compared to Win 7. Also, noted the new adapter looks to be just as I suspected a great way to create a weak point for accidental pressure if used in anything with an existing dock, my bedside table dock that goes into a Meridian F80 being the prime example. I almost guarantee knocking it and poss now doing damage that never could happen in the past whenever the phone goes off when half asleep. On top Apple Australia site says adapter available in Oct! That's even more gold, not to have it available at lauch(unless site is wrong).....

EDIT: I suppose the folks over at CNET and WSJ are also bunging on about nothing as well in the article they've written about how bad a decision the dock connector change is. Seems the commonsense aspects of peoples day to day need for connectivity isn't a foreign concept to either publication:
