Here's the release page from the iPhone Dev-Team who put together redsn0w: Dev-Team Blog
That is the official redsn0w page. Redsn0w.com redirects there. This is the latest release page: Dev-Team Blog - Baseband Freedom
Redsn0w always allows multiple iPhones to jailbreak. Certain firmwares may not work, but the program is built in to be somewhat universal. I think whatever page you're reading just has the wrong info on it.
But you do have to go in to DFU mode & then select the Deactivate button to deactivate. If you used greenpoison or absinthe I would probably avoid this method, however, using the bootrom exploit instead of the "backup & restore" userland exploit is the better option if it is available (and since you have an iPhone 4, it would have been).
Good luck to you!

So the process to unlock would simply be to put in a sim from a carrier other than AT&T, wait until the phone kicks back to the activation screen, and then activate with iTunes or on the phone over wifi.

WOW two iPhone 4S still in contract unlocked today. Yesterday I was denied by chat that it wasn't possible for Agents to submit unlock request BUT today after receiving email back from web form that they could not locate my account I went back to chat today and Agent asked for IMEI today and responded that he submitted Unlock request. Used SAMprefs to deactivate and plugged to iTunes and BAM "Congrats, Your iPhone has been Unlocked" So I mentioned my other iPhone 4S email and after a few questions BAM he said request submitted. Before I ended chat I had already checked both iPhones to see if they were unlocked and yes matter of seconds when he sent the request.
Bottom line if you read all the chat logs I have had in the last 2 days with AT&T Specialist you can tell they are full of SH*T and will lie to the customer over and over.
You are now connected with 'Reggie'.

Nicholas: I have been a customer since 2008 and I purchased it and activated it on AT&T
Nicholas: So there should be a account number lol
Reggie: Thank you for the information.
Reggie: I am not sure why the request was denied.
Reggie: I have reviewed your account information and sent a request to Apple to unlock the device.
Nicholas: Can you manually push it thru?
Nicholas: ok thank you
Nicholas: I also have another email that went the same

Reggie: You should be aware that this is the 5th device unlocked on your account and you will not be able to unlock another one until August of next year.
Nicholas: it is for number 540-903-****
Nicholas: As of today I have only unlocked a iphone 4
Nicholas: so this should be the second unlock
Nicholas: and the 540-903-**** would be the 3rd
Reggie: According to the account notes the device I just unlocked was number 5.
Nicholas: Can you look into that? That is incorrect notes
Reggie: Could I get the device IMEI number please?
Nicholas: The one that was unlocked a few months ago was IMEI 0126550********
Nicholas: The one we just did 0129360********
Nicholas: and for line 540-903-**** is 0129360********
Nicholas: those are the only 3 I have ever requested
Nicholas: Thank you for your help BTW
Reggie: I have unlocked the second device as well.
Nicholas: Thank you sir
Reggie: However, you will need to contact Customer Care at 800.331.0500 if you try to unlock any other devices in the future.

Even with all that said - I'm just thinking about doing the $9 unlock that's on eBay.. Trying to do anything thru AT&T is like an act of congress. :-(
Having tried this now 4 times with different 4S in contract in my family and 6 different reps - I'm coming to the conclusion that you are not telling us the truth. I was hoping you were 'straight' with us. But it seems you are unlocking out of contract iPhone 4 ---- or 4S - but definitely OUT of contract.
