    Correct.
Thank you VERY much. Enormously helpful series of posts! I finally have a way now to use my phone less expensively in Europe when I travel there.. And for my family's phones too. yay!

    Many thanks!

Whats the normal wait time for you before you got a response that your phone was unlocked?

My i4 has the A4 chip. I may be, as you say, "100% incorrect," but I do read very carefully about what I am about to do with my phone. And the above certainly states that it is NOT for my phone.

As to the second part of your answer, I did fire up Redsnow (previous to posting before), and it appears I need to go to the jailbreak pane, check Deactivate, and then run iTunes. I'm not sure I want to go that way. Hence my decision to NOT use this method. It may work, but I see enough chances for issues to not wish to take the risk.
Redsn0w has NEVER been released to only work with one phone (except maybe when there was only 1 iPhone). Can you tell me the site you are getting this information from?

Here's the release page from the iPhone Dev-Team who put together redsn0w: Dev-Team Blog

That is the official redsn0w page. Redsn0w.com redirects there. This is the latest release page: Dev-Team Blog - Baseband Freedom

Redsn0w always allows multiple iPhones to jailbreak. Certain firmwares may not work, but the program is built in to be somewhat universal. I think whatever page you're reading just has the wrong info on it.

But you do have to go in to DFU mode & then select the Deactivate button to deactivate. If you used greenpoison or absinthe I would probably avoid this method, however, using the bootrom exploit instead of the "backup & restore" userland exploit is the better option if it is available (and since you have an iPhone 4, it would have been).

    Good luck to you!

So are you saying - that if we want to keep our jailbreak after the unlock (of a 4S) and we jailbroke with Absinthe - that neither of the Deactivate methods from SAM or Redsn0w will work? And Absinthe doesn't have its OWN deactivate command?

I know this question wasn't for me but, worst case scenario is that you would have to restore and re-jailbreak. May take a little time, but the end result will be a permanently unlocked iPhone. I haven't tried the deactivation method with redsn0w on an Absinthe jailbroken phone.
For me, I always restore anyway. OCD

is the apostrophe after the 4 because it was 2 iphone 4 or because it was 2 iphone 4S and it's a typo?
Apostrophes do not make plural. Ever.

The clarification comes from whether-or-not the "S" is upper-case or lower-case.

I don't know if the SAM method will work. I've never tried it. I've also never tried running redsn0w over absinthe & have no idea what the effect would be. I do know that the deactivate option in redsn0w requires a bootrom exploit & will not work with a 4S. So you'll have to restore & rejailbreak.

No need for deactivation with a 4S as none of the jailbreak tools can hactivate a 4S. So there shouldn't be any hactivated 4S's out there.
So the process to unlock would simply be to put in a sim from a carrier other than AT&T, wait until the phone kicks back to the activation screen, and then activate with iTunes or on the phone over wifi.

No need to restore. No need to rejailbreak. Different carrier SIM card is all that is needed when officially unlocking a 4S.

Well if you don't have others sim card than ATT all you need to do is install SAM and make sure it's from Bingner, no need to DFU your iphone. Just deactivate from SAM then connect to itunes. that's it. Then you can remove or keep SAM after.

Yup, that will work too if you only have an AT&T sim.

WOW two iPhone 4S still in contract unlocked today. Yesterday I was denied by chat that it wasn't possible for Agents to submit unlock request BUT today after receiving email back from web form that they could not locate my account I went back to chat today and Agent asked for IMEI today and responded that he submitted Unlock request. Used SAMprefs to deactivate and plugged to iTunes and BAM "Congrats, Your iPhone has been Unlocked" So I mentioned my other iPhone 4S email and after a few questions BAM he said request submitted. Before I ended chat I had already checked both iPhones to see if they were unlocked and yes matter of seconds when he sent the request.

Bottom line if you read all the chat logs I have had in the last 2 days with AT&T Specialist you can tell they are full of SH*T and will lie to the customer over and over.

Please note: Protecting your personal information is one of our highest priorities; hence, you will be required to provide account related information to ensure whom we are working with. We cannot complete your request because we found no valid current or former mobile or account number for this request. Reggie: Thank you for contacting Business Data Support. My name is Reggie. Before we begin, can I confirm the wireless number that we will be working with is 703220****?
    Nicholas: yes sir
    Reggie: Thank you.
Reggie: SO you are having trouble getting the device unlocked. Could I get the device IMEI number please?
    Nicholas: yes one moment pleas
    Nicholas: 0129360********
    Reggie: Thank you.
Reggie: Where did the device come from?
    Nicholas: Apple store
Nicholas: I have been a customer since 2008 and I purchased it and activated it on AT&T
Nicholas: So there should be a account number lol
Reggie: Thank you for the information.
Reggie: I am not sure why the request was denied.
Reggie: I have reviewed your account information and sent a request to Apple to unlock the device.
Nicholas: Can you manually push it thru?
    Nicholas: ok thank you
Nicholas: I also have another email that went the same
Nicholas: Request number: 766** Thank you for contacting AT&T Customer Care about unlocking your iPhone. We cannot complete your request because we found no valid current or former mobile or account number for this request. If you have questions, review the general eligibility requirements for unlocking an iPhone.
Reggie: You should be aware that this is the 5th device unlocked on your account and you will not be able to unlock another one until August of next year.
Nicholas: it is for number 540-903-****
Nicholas: As of today I have only unlocked a iphone 4
Nicholas: so this should be the second unlock
Nicholas: and the 540-903-**** would be the 3rd
Reggie: According to the account notes the device I just unlocked was number 5.
Nicholas: Can you look into that? That is incorrect notes
Reggie: Could I get the device IMEI number please?
Nicholas: The one that was unlocked a few months ago was IMEI 0126550********
Nicholas: The one we just did 0129360********
Nicholas: and for line 540-903-**** is 0129360********
Nicholas: those are the only 3 I have ever requested
Nicholas: Thank you for your help BTW
Reggie: I have unlocked the second device as well.
    Nicholas: Thank you sir
Reggie: However, you will need to contact Customer Care at 800.331.0500 if you try to unlock any other devices in the future.
Nicholas: Ok I will keep that in mind but I should be good you said it resets in August of 2013?
    Reggie: That is correct.
Nicholas: Thank you sir have a wonderful day take care

That happened to me to - but obviously I DO have a valid current account and so do you. Evidently - if you LEAVE BLANK that last field that asks you for your AT&T log on passcode - you get the above message - even if you DO have a current account. The trick is - that when you put in your passcode to LOG IN to AT&T online you get an error message saying -- Please check - your passcode - as if it's wrong.. So I got frustrated the first - time and left that field blank and hit SUBMIT and it went through saying - we'll get back to you in 5-7 days. In 36 hours I got the exact same message as you did there. But of course I DO have a current account. And I'll bet you do too. So that means there's something wrong with their system.. BUT - the day I got the above message - I tried again - this time - I put in that 'passcode' field the '4 digit' passcode I use for my ATM card - which I also use for 'phone info passwords' they often ask you for to talk to customer service and prove that it's you.. THIS time - with that 4 digit code in the passcode field I got - a THANK YOU - we'll contact you in 5-6 days message - AGAIN. NOW it's been 48 hours since I did that -- and no - message like above.. So somewhere along the way I guess we all created a 'passcode' to AT&T - 4 digit.....??? I'm just guessing here. When they deny you -- they won't deny you with the language above. They'll deny you saying YOU'RE STILL IN YOUR CONTRACT PERIOD - or OUR NEW POLICY... blah, blah, blah.. So don't lose hope.. Try to remember what you '4 digit' passcode to your account is - or as them to send it to you..

Even with all that said - I'm just thinking about doing the $9 unlock that's on eBay.. Trying to do anything thru AT&T is like an act of congress. :-(

Soldier. I did the same thing and it didn't work. They denied as being in contract. As I look back over all of your examples - there is nothing in your chat logs proving your phones are in contract. I'm very suspect of what you are telling us. You are VERY new here - only 14 posts - Are you just trying to get our hopes up? You could be unlocking out of contract iPhone 4 with each of these chat logs. There's no way for us to verify from the chat logs that they're 4S 'in contract'.

Having tried this now 4 times with different 4S in contract in my family and 6 different reps - I'm coming to the conclusion that you are not telling us the truth. I was hoping you were 'straight' with us. But it seems you are unlocking out of contract iPhone 4 ---- or 4S - but definitely OUT of contract.

OH GREAT!!! So for us 4S people -- we can keep our jailbreak after UNLOCK and keep our AT&T Sim card in.... and REDSNOW will NOT work - but SAM deactivate WILL work for 4S newly unlocked and KEEPING jailbreak with Absinthe.. Right????
