Default Apple's iOS Platform to Become World's Largest Gaming Platform This Year

Apple’s iOS platform seems to have had a huge impact on gaming with more people choosing to get their entertainment on the iPhone and iPad rather than dedicated handheld consoles such as those created by Nintendo and Sony. By the end of the year, analysts are expecting Game Center accounts on iOS to surpass the 200 million milestone, making it the world’s largest gaming platform. According to Apple, there are currently more than 130 million Game Center accounts, which means iOS devices are already more popular than home consoles such as the Nintendo Wii, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. As of right now, Apple’s iOS platform is the world’s third largest gaming platform.

Analytics firm, Asymco, expects Game Center to surpass 200 million users by the end of 2012, putting Apple’s platform way out in front, ahead of the Nintendo DS, which is currently the best-selling console to date. “No gaming device has ever reached the 200 million mark” according to Asymco. If you look at OpenFeint figures, a third-party gaming platform on iOS, there are already more than 180 million people gaming on iOS devices.

It should be noted that it isn’t accurate to look at sales figures alone because not everyone who purchases an iOS device games on it. Both Game Center and OpenFeint accounts are the most accurate way of determining the figures. Even then, you’ll need to keep in mind that some users may have multiple Game Center or OpenFeint accounts for various reasons. Apple’s iOS devices seem to continue to gear up to overtake consoles in the coming future.

What about GameCenter on Mac (Mountain Lion) now....? Those are GameCenter accounts, but not iOS devices. Can they tell if it is a iOS device, or are they simply counting the number of GameCenter accounts?

I'm sure they can identify if the game is being played on a Mac or an iDevice. Just like tethering, each device puts off a unique code identifying if it's a PC, Mac, iDevice, etc.

I really wish your account would transfer from device to device. If you play angry birds on your Mac..then go to your phone, or vice versa you have to do the levels all over again. Silly to me! Make it right Apple. What is the point of a game center? Forward the users progress from device to device...pretty please??

According to Apple, there are presently quite a hundred thirty million Game Center accounts, which implies iOS devices are already additional popular than home consoles just like the PlayStation three, the Xbox 360, and the Nintendo Wii. In fact, it’s presently the world’s third-largest gaming platform.
