iOS, Android Touch New Zenith of Smartphone Shipment Dominance
iOS and Android have obliterated the smartphone market shares of BlackBerry, Symbian and Windows. And the dominance is only growing more pronounced.
According to the latest data presented in the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, Android and iOS smartphone shipments for the second quarter of 2012 amounted to 85% of all smartphone shipments.
Unfortunately for Apple, however, Android dominated iOS during Q2. In fact, Android amassed a "commanding" 68.1% market share of all smartphones shipped during the quarter. BlackBerry and Symbian reached just 4.8% and 4.4% respectively.
"Android continues to fire on all cylinders," said Ramon Llamas, senior research analyst with IDC. "The market was entreated to several flagship models from Android's handset partners, prices were well within reach to meet multiple budgetary needs, and the user experience from both Google and its handset partners boosted Android smartphones' utility far beyond simple telephony."

Even with the iPhone 5 there's no catching android. Unless apple releases some crazy 3d ultimate mega super duper phone. Not happening.

Who cares about market shares. Look at the income and you'll see who's winning this battle.

This is funny to me why do people compare 1 iphone to countless android "smartphones"

if people want to compare, they should compare the iPhone 4S to any one particular Android phone. Heck, lets wait till next quarter and compare the new iPhone to any new Android phone that gets released. We'll see how they stack up.

It's kind of whack

Apple doesn't own more of the market share because it doing the same thing it did with pcs. It isn't licensing it's software and only getting a portion of the profit. Every phone apple sells is profit for them however with android the people that made the phone get a share and android gets a share for the software

I don't know anything about market share and blah blah blah.... I just know that now (within about the last year or so), almost ALL of my friends, family, and co-workers have iPhones now.
Years ago when I had my 3g, and even when I had my 4, i was always telling my friends all the awesome things we could do if they had a iPhone too (games, messages, FaceTime, file sharing, and much much more). Well it took a little while, but it happened!
Everyone has them now! How many times have you been out and got a text message, and you and 5 other people all look around after hearing that iconic sound, and think (and sometimes say) "was that you or me"?
Not only is it popular, it's also the standard now. No one cares about the droids...they are literally like droids....mass produced, no personality, forgettable, so many different models you don't even know their names.El Zurdo
