Default Revert Back to the Keyboard You're Used to From Google Chrome With 'ChromeURL'

Google Chrome for iOS was launched only last week and its popularity has been increasing at a mind-boggling rate. While most people are content with the browser as it sits, jailbreak developers are already working on making it better. If you want to change the way Google Chrome's keyboard acts when you start typing in a URL in the URL bar, then a new free jailbreak tweak dubbed ChromeURL by iOS developers Maximus and ac3xx might be just what you've been looking for.

As shown above, the tweak will change the way the keyboard looks when you're actively in the URL text field so it matches that of Mobile Safari. Google Chrome comes stock with its own keyboard implementation that takes up more room than Mobile Safari’s version does. The keyboard also only gives you the ability to pick “.com” for the URL you type in and not some other popular TLD (top level domains) such as “.org,” ".edu," and “.net.” Mobile Safari's version of the keyboard will let you pick from many common top level domains by holding down on the key as shown below:

It is only about three characters that you have to change at the end of a URL to get the result you want, however the change in the keyboard so you can select the top level domain without typing it out manually can make Web surfing faster on your iOS device since you won’t be using your time typing them out.

Changing the Google Chrome URL keyboard back to the Mobile Safari-like keyboard also gives you a better window of view between the URL bar and the keyboard since it eliminates that top row from the keyboard – this lets you see more of the Web site you’re on while you’re typing, which can help you verify if you’re on the right Web page or not.

One negative part of the tweak is that it gets rid of that top bar added to the keyboard that appears while you are editing a URL. That top bar conveniently places a slash, colon, period, and dash all right at an easy-to-access area of the keyboard while the Mobile Safari keyboard only has a period and a slash – accessing the other symbols means you have to switch the keyboard into symbol view. It would be better if the developers implemented the hold down feature to see more top level domains into the Google Chrome keyboard instead of outright replacing it. Hopefully Google does this themselves in a future Google Chrome update.

If you don’t might typing out the last few characters of a URL every once in a while when it doesn’t have “.com” at the end, then you shouldn’t need this tweak. I personally enjoy having the top bar added to the keyboard since it makes it easier to access certain characters.

The space bar is on the Chrome keyboard for a reason. The URL bar also acts as the search bar. This tweak makes searches a lot more cumbersome.

Good point. I'm so used to using Safari's Google bar that I forgot about that unibar.

The unibar is very helpful less clicking for sure. I'm loving chrome beside the little issues I have with them.

This completely defeats the purpose of Chrome's omnibar and makes searching take three times as long.

This tweak does nothing but make Chrome LESS usable. Without the omnibar the only difference between Chrome and Safari is where the bookmarks sync from

If you're already jailbroken there are a few different options for setting Chrome as the default browser. Make shortcuts with Safari, they open in Chrome. There's even an add-on for Safari that gives you an "Open in Chrome" button.
