Hard to tell if he was trolling or not.
Seriously though I think we should count more based on look and technical standards of the phone. There has only been three different form factors of the iPhone. Original -> 3G/3GS brought 3G. 3G/3GS -> 4/4S brought retina, HSPA+, and CDMA. The next iPhone which inevitably will be called the new iPhone (Apple's naming scheme used for their other like Macbook Pro and iPad) will likely bring us a new form factor with 4G capabilities.
Despite the next generation iPhone technically being the 6th; in reality its only the 3rd time the phone will be something fundamentally different from its predecessor. And "fundamentally different" by Apple standards isn't much. The device sells like hotcakes so why change it too much?
