iOS 6 Introduces 'Passbook' Native App

In a mobile app power play that will do wonders to keep iPhone users better organized, Apple today touted a new app called Passbook for iOS 6.
"Passbook is the simplest way to get all of your passes in one place," Scott Forstall, Apple's vice president of iPhone Software, told the developers and press in attendance this morning during the WWDC keynote kickoff.
A native app to be delivered in iOS 6, Passbook's user interface is an attractive platform that enables iOS users to keep and access electronic versions of their important tickets, boarding passes and other merchant cards in one centralized location.
"Passbook takes all of these passes and combines them together in one place, and integrates it right into the OS, and they are beautiful," Forstall said, demonstrating how - for example - Passbook updates your electronic boarding ticket if your flight is delayed or cancelled.
The demo also included references to a Starbucks card, Amtrak boarding pass, and - not surprisingly - an Apple Store card. Passbook is integrated with the lock screen for easy access and helpful reminders. Best of all, when you're done with a card or ready to toss a digital ticket, a "visual shredder" is used to clear the clutter from your app.

NFC is fine and dandy, but without the infrastructure behind it (visa? mastercard? some major bank?) you have nothing. the trouble is getting someone to build the readers, the network, the payment system behind it, and get it widely adopted. NFC is a chip, nothing more.
