Default [Review] SpotSiri - Launch Siri From SpotLight

While there are those of us that think SpotLight is an outdated function of iOS and just wish it would simply go away, iOS developer Rudolf Lichtner has created a new free jailbreak tweak dubbed SpotSiri that will add a Siri button right into the SpotLight interface to make it have a more useful function than just sitting there and never being used. The button is shown in the screenshot above, just right of the SpotLight text bar.

The idea behind the tweak stemmed from the fact that SpotLight is barely used anymore except by a small percentage of iOS users. Another reason behind it was that Siri is a more advanced assistant platform than SpotLight ever could be. This is especially so with jailbreaks tweaks in Cydia that make Siri capable of doing things such as launching applications, searching the Web, and operating hardware functions of the iOS device such as powering down. SpotLight has usually only been useful for offering shortcuts to applications or getting to contacts faster – both of which Siri can already do.

Instead of just removing the SpotLight interface outright and making it so scrolling over to the SpotLight page would display Siri, which was a considerable option, Rudolf left the SpotLight interface to help make the small portion of SpotLight users happy and still offer easier access to Siri. Mashing down on the home button can be annoying and if you have a broken home button, it can be even more difficult to get Siri opened up.

To use the button, you must type in your query into the SpotLight text bar and then press the Siri button. The text you entered will be processed through Siri the same way it would have been if you had verbally asked Siri the same thing. In this respect, the tweak also gives you a way to use Siri more quietly in environments where you don't want to make a lot of noise. Unforunately, SpotSiri doesn't allow you, at all, to use Siri by speaking. You will need to launch Siri using the home button to do this.

Graphically, the button looks very nice. It’s not an awkward icon and it appears to match its surroundings very well. The good news is that the button doesn’t just look good, but it works as advertised too. Tapping it once will launch Siri without the need to mash down on your home button. The added feature will not slow down your iOS device when scrolling over to SpotLight.

If you’re tired of pressing the home button to open Siri and you want to take more advantage of the iOS device’s amazing touch screen, then it would be a good idea to check out SpotSiri. The free tweak works with not only the iPhone 4S, but also with older devices running the Spire Siri port.

For those of us, like myself, who don't use spotlight, you can install NOSPOT.

This is a little off-topic, but I just turn off all the phone-specific Spotlight search capabilities and use it to search the internet. Faster than using a browser or the Google app.
