[Review] SiriNBA - Get NBA Information Through Siri

While Siri is a powerful iOS companion, she could be a lot more powerful if Apple permitted it. Unfortunately, they don’t – so we jailbreak our devices, and it allows us to do more with her. A recent jailbreak application called AssistantExtensions has provided a framework for developers to add more third-party support to Siri. One of the latest is an add-on for Siri dubbed SiriNBA by iOS developer Evan Coleman, which allows you to get information about NBA games right through Siri.
Requiring iOS 5 and any kind of Siri functionality, including but not limited to Spire, you can ask SiriNBA questions such as, “What’s the score of the Knicks game?” or, "Who won the Knicks game tonight?" and Siri will intelligently locate the score of the game as it’s being played for you. The Cydia description for SiriNBA states that the add-on can also distinguish between shortened names such as saying “Cavs” instead of “Cavaliers.”
To find SiriNBA even the least bit useful, you have to be a sports fan. If you’re not, then you probably won’t be too inclined to care about asking Siri questions about the NBA. If you’re a sports fan, then SiriNBA is free in Cydia through the BigBoss repository and Evan says that he will be producing future add-ons for Siri for other sports as well so you can query more than just the NBA. There is no eye-candy interface for SiriNBA like there have been for other AssistantExtensions add-ons, but it looks simple and successfully does what it says it will do.
SiriNBA will not cause any lag for Siri and the response times are quick. When a game starts, SiriNBA will have all of the information for the game, but it won't have information if a game is not being played. Check it out if you're an NBA fan.

I was just thinking about this the other day. I was wanting some NCAA Basketball scores and thought it would be nice to ask Siri the score of a game! This is wonderful! No more being lazy, swiping two screens over to open the ESPN SCORECENTER APP to find out the score. Bring on College Hoops and we're golden!

03-02-2012, 07:08 PM #17Nice touch, but it won't recognize the 76ers as the Sixers. How'd that get overlooked? The Cydia description for SiriNBA states that the add-on can also distinguish between shortened names such as saying “Cavs” instead of “Cavaliers.”
Would be nice if stats and depth charts were eventually added as well; "What's Dirk Nowitzki's scoring average?" "What's Kobe Bryant's field-goal percentage?" "Who's starting for the Knicks tonight?"Last edited by severe; 03-02-2012 at 07:11 PM.
