IPhone Accounts for More Than Half of Verizon's Smartphone Sales Last Quarter

Verizon posted an unusual fourth quarter loss closing out 2011 down 71 cents a share despite strong numbers lead by iPhone sales.
Verizon added 1.5 million net subscribers with much of the credit going to the iPhone. Apple shipped 4.2 million Verizon iPhones during the final quarter of the year accounting for accounted for more than half (54%) of Verizon's 7.7 million smartphones sold during the last quarter of the year.
The iPhone 4S release spurred sales and Verizon’s claim that they activated 2.2 million LTE phones, hotspots, and tablets during the last quarter imply Verizon’s 4G offerings in the Droid RAZR, Galaxy Nexus and a few others sold considerably less than the iPhone. Even more the percentage of smartphones on Verizon’s network climbed from 39% in the summer to 44% by the fall.
AT&T and Sprint have not released their quarterly earnings yet, but expect the numbers to be equally impressive in terms of iPhones sold. How the iPhone impacted Sprint’s quarter will be particularly interesting considering the company has been losing subscribers annually for some time now.
