Default Nissan Develops Self Healing iPhone Case

Nissan isn’t the first name most associate with the cutting edge of gadget case technology, but their self-healing Scratch Shield iPhone case has the potential to be a revolutionary product in an already oversaturated market.

The technology behind the “self-repairing” case technology isn’t new, it’s been in use on several Nissan and Infiniti car models since 2005. The collaborative effort between the University of Tokyo and Advanced Soft Materials INC consists of an “outer ‘paint’ made from polyrotaxane, which means that when damage occurs to the coating in the form of a fine scratch, the chemical structure is able to react to change back to its original shape and fill the gap – ‘healing’ the blemish” according to Nissan.

Nissan soft-launched the case over the weekend at an automotive event held in Dubai. Nissan handed a number of cases out to customers and journalists for beta testing and announced that if the demand was strong enough they would consider mass producing the cases for a release to the general public. Hopefully the beta testing creates a strong buzz, but that all depends on how well the self-healing feature of case works in real world use.

"In Japan, we've already linked up with world-leading mobile operator NTT DoCoMo to allow them to use the Scratch Shield technology on its Style Series N-03B mobile phones, and we think this technology has real scope beyond the automotive world," — Bob Laishley, Overseas Programme Director Business Development for Nissan in Europe.
The pockets of gadget owners can be unforgiving dungeons capable of scratching the toughest reinforced screens, and cases. However, if the underlying technology of Nissan’s cases has been used on cars for the last five years, I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt when it comes to the material's ability to withstand consumers' pockets.

I had no idea about this "self healing" stuff. It seems all too futuristic to me.

I can vouch for the paint on cars. It's been around years now.

Not really. This is a great concept which has been around for quite a while and has huge potential for future use.

These self-healing materials/coatings can be achieved in different ways.

    For example, microcapsule embedment.
To put it in the simplest way, it involves embedding nano/micro-capsules filled with still liquid material, in an already hardened material.
This way, when a slight scratch occurs, these capsules erupt and "release" the liquid material which then hardens by chemical process,
for example a reaction with oxygen.

Look up Self healing materials on google, it gets you a long way.

The self-healing coating uses chitosan which is derived from chitin, the main component of the exoskeleton of crustaceans (lobsters, crabs, shrimps etc). The chitosan is chemically incorporated into traditional polymer materials, such as the ones used in the outer coatings to protect the paint on cars. When a scratch occurs on the outer coating, the chemical structure is damaged and the chitosan responds to the UV component of sunlight. Chemical chains are then formed with other materials in the coating, eventually filling the scratch. This process can take less than an hour and may eventually lead the “scratch free car” or other products in the future.

This was on the internet about the nissan paint. I bet the case works the same way..

I've seen this scratch shield paint and it's pretty cool, there's plenty of YouTube vids on it.

Why the ministry of sound logo ?

I don't care if my iPhone's cover gets scratched. That's the whole point. The cover takes the scratches so my phone stays in good condition. Now if they could make the back of an iPhone out of this material, that would be awesome!
