Did Apple Inadvertently Launch Internal 'GameStore' iOS App Today?

Following a number of reader tips and subsequent blogosphere chatter, it appears that an internal testing application for iPhone in-app purchases called "GameStore" made its way to the App Store today.
The $0.99 app, however, doesn't do anything. That is, there's no apparent functionality to the app that some believe was accidentally leaked and pushed to the App Store on Monday.
What doesn't make sense, naturally, is why the app - which clearly lists Apple as the publisher - is still available.
Curiously enough, "GameStore" has a release date of 12/31/2011 and offers in-app purchase options for a number of racing-themed game (but the app doesn't allow you to actually purchase the games).
For now, the developers and readers we've connected with believe the app release was an accident. Adding credence to that claim is the fact that when a user reviews the app's listing from an iPhone, the posting date is June 9, 2009. At that time, iPhone OS 3.0 was the talk of the town ahead of Apple's launch of in-app purchasing, a feature that is central to today's leaked app.
What remains to be clarified, obviously, is why the app went public over the weekend and why it is still available despite serving no purpose or function.Last edited by Michael Essany; 01-02-2012 at 10:48 AM.

I have never listed anything for sale on the appstore, so please excuse the ignorance, but how does one "accidentally" leak something like this? Furthermore, how does it accidentally have a price of $.99?
