Updating to 5.0.1 on a A5 device is safe - the jailbreak isn't being held back by the iOS software at the moment - it's the hardware structure of the A5 chipset holding it back.
Updating to 5.0.1 won't block a jailbreak on an 4S or iPad2.
Just don't update beyond 5.0.1 if Apple releases one in the next few days, which will probably happen now that the A4 jailbreak has been released.
I just hope this A4 jailbreak doesn't screw us A5 people over.
I personally would have held it back until the A5 untether was also up and running.
I mean, why tip your hand to Apple before you have ALL iOS devices jailbroken? Just a little concern I have. Might not be any big deal.

I have a question, hopefully someone can help me out. I started downloading the 5.0.1 ipsw through iTunes and the file says it's 800 mb which will take me around an hour to download... Instead can I just use OTA updating, update my phone and just do a fresh restore and jailbreak?
Just wondering if that will f*** me over at the end?
Thanks

Im on iphone 4, 5.0 tethered with an older baseband, which is the right way to do mine? Can i just instal corona 5.0.1 untethered? Or should i do a full itunes restore to 5.0.1 and then use latest redsnow?
Thanks

I just want to make sure I have this right:
I am still on 4.3.3 and I am going to update. I have the custom ispw file. I have to install that to update to 5.0.1, then use redsnow?
I want to preserve my baseband since I am on 1.59.00. (I have been using Greenp0sion and Snowbreeze (since Snowbreeze gives you the option to preserve your baseband.) I have never used Redsnow before. Does Redsnow keeps your baseband like Snowbreeze? Or is the Dev Team or Chronic Dev Team is going to push the jailbreak into the other tools like Snowbreeze or Greenp0sion? Should I wait? Oh, and my SHSH has been updated on Cydia to 5.0.1.
Thanks for any help.
And of course, thanks to all of the people involved in this effort, especially pod2g for his work.

Im curious about the OTA update then running the new Redsn0w as well. Will this work? Also, If doing a restore then running RS, will I have to install the Corona patch or is the patch just for the tethered 5.0.1 users?
Can someone clarify?
Edit: So after reading some pages on the interweb, update to 5.0.1, use RS to JB, load Cydia and install Corona. But...can the update be done OTA?Last edited by Turb02; 12-27-2011 at 08:43 AM.
