Thread: Notification Center to Get Improvements?

Default Notification Center to Get Improvements?

This concept video, retrieved by AppleInsider, shows a very nice Notification Center concept.

Apple is on a hiring spree and numbers are showing that it's for Notification Center. Notification Center is a new feature in iOS 5 that puts all of your notifications in one place. It's a notification manager. It also houses some widgets such as Weather and Stocks and there are numerous more to add if you jailbreak your iDevice and download third party widgets from Cydia. Jailbreaking and installing these widgets and such can easily start to slow down your device and cause lagginess when opening Notification Center. The simple reasoning for this is because iOS isn't made to support additions to Notification Center; it's simply not optimized for it. The same thing would happen if you tried to add more weight to a semi-tractor trailer, it would use more power to haul the weight and eventually the truck wouldn't be able to handle it anymore. Well the additions to Notification Center do the same thing and adding more and more uses more and more memory. That is what causes the lagginess.

Maybe, just maybe, Apple will build their own Notification Center additions. These additions would be built and engineered for iOS to be light and work without lagginess. We know that the single core A4 processor is a fast and capable processor and it does a great job at opening things smoothly. But, the single core can only go so far. Apple is bringing its development up to speed with the dual core A5 processor which is capable of twice the workloads than the A4 processor. We've seen how these additions can become laggy on older devices. Just try running a jailbroken iOS 5 device on an iPod touch 3G or iPhone 3GS and you will see the iOS's animations aren't as fluid as they are on an iPhone 4. I think we will see the same come jailbreak development for the A5 chip.

As I digress, Apple has hired a ton of people that we believe to be for Notification Center development. We have yet to see widgets in the iPad 2's Notification Center, which is strange because it was the most powerful processor in Apple's lineup when iOS 5 was released. It's possible that they will reform Notification Center for the iPad 2, or maybe they will simply improve the native Notification Center on iOS all around devices. One of the hired people was Peter Hajas, a well-known iOS developer in the jailbreak community. He was hired for an internship at Apple because of his jailbreak tweak, Mobile Notifier, which was a big hit for iOS 4 users. But, Hajas wasn't the only one. Another hire belongs to Rich Dellinger, an interface design architect for Palm. Yeah, he wasn't from the jailbreak scene, but it's another addition to the appearance chapter.

We hope that in the hiring of many of these new developers, Apple will bring more features to Notification Center that will in turn give the end users the best experience that we can have with our iDevices. Apple will never meet the criteria for jailbreak-developers in that Apple makes the iDevice what they want and not what the users want, but Apple will continue to roll out cool things for us; derived from the jailbreak community or not. I see Notification Center as a great start for where Apple could begin improving their iOS operating system.

With Apple opening jobs for graphical concept artists and jailbreak developers, what do you think they could be planning? Tell us what you think in the comments.

Those are some nice ideas especially when people call it doesn't interrupt you

the guy that made the video is now an intern for apple. While these upgrades would be nice, it doesnt mean they would be implemented.

I love the available widgets already out there but they do slow down my notification center. Instagram widget would be amazing...quickly post and see your subscribed stream. Just a thought to the developers out there

Widgets is a definite. They need to add that ASAP. Should have been part of notification center to begin with, but that's not the way Apple does things, always leaves you wanting more. The call notification at top is a good idea too.

They want jailbreak devs? That's a sign right there they are trying to do away with us. Why would you want them other than to plug holes for them? To keep things the way they are the jb devs need to turn down the offer. Widgets would be nice tho.

    Indeed true but not always...

They're smart enough to not show the whole picture.

ISX does 90% of this already...

  13. #13
Apple should incorporate (buy) ISX, THAT would be worth all the tweaks.

If true, this enhancement will effect a lot of already paid tweaks including:

    IntelliScreenX
    Lockinfo
    CallBar
    Favorite Contact for NC

Apple have already made a bunch of paid application useless:

    Wifi Sync
    Free Sync
    Snap Tap
    Snappy (partially)
    DisplayOut
    PhotoAlbums+ (partially)
    Plus a lot more.

Man... sure looks like Android's Notification system. Unfortunately, Apple will be considered Innovative and will probably patent the pull down notification bar and then sue Google, Samsung, and HTC. Shame.
