Default Apple Pushing Out High Volumes of iPhone 3GS' and CDMA iPhone 4's for Holiday Season

According to the Taiwan-based publication, Digitimes, industry sources are providing numbers stating the OEM production of the iPhone 3GS remains steady with an expected volume of two million units in the current quarter and 1.4 - 1.7 million units in the first quarter of calendar 2012. The report also noted that the production of the CDMA iPhone 4 is expected to come in at a number between 800,000 and one million units in the fourth quarter of 2011 along with another 500,000 – 600,000 units next quarter.

The iPhone 3GS became the first of Apple’s handsets to be offered for free with contract in the U.S. in October. The wireless carrier partner AT&T quietly raised the price to $0.99 a month later but for most people, the dollar was negligible. Apple executives have recently indicated that they view the free iPhone 3GS as a “good dynamic” for the iPhone family because it introduces the company’s products “to a wider audience of customers.”

Even after being on the market for two years, the iPhone 3GS has remained the second best-selling smartphone in the U.S. last quarter, only behind its successor, the iPhone 4 (according to data from the NPD group). Retail checks have also suggested a continued strong demand for the iPhone 3GS. The rumored two million iPhone 3GS units will probably play a part, albeit a small one, in helping Apple reach its projection of an all-time sales record for iPhone units this quarter (along with the release of the iPhone 4S and strong iPhone 4 sales). The company’s results of the September quarter disappointed analysts largely because of the number of iPhone buyers holding out for the iPhone 4S, which proved to be a larger number than expected.

Apple continues to believe that a high demand for the iPhone 4S, coupled with continued sales of the iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS, will help drive record revenues of an estimated $37 billion in the December quarter. Analysts are expecting Apple to sell between 28 to 30 million iPhone units during the period, although one analysis based on the U.S. carrier estimates suggests the company could possibly ship as many as 42 million handsets – either way, a pretty hefty number for the Cupertino giant to be selling.
