Google Releases New Social Reading Platform Called Currents
After an extensive period of beta testing and refining, a new Google product comes to fruition. Today, Google unveiled the brand new social publishing platform called “Currents.” The project, which was previously known under the “Propeller” code-name is a mobile app that is available on both Android and iOS devices. Publishers are given the option to package their content in a magazine-style web app, which is presented on tablets and smartphones with HTML5 usage.
According to Google:
Google Currents is a new application for Android devices, iPads and iPhones that lets you explore online magazines and other content with the swipe of a finger. It brings together this content in a beautiful and simple way so you can easily navigate between words, pictures and video on your smartphone or tablet.
Along with end-user enhancements, Google promised participating publishers that they will soon receive a “Best Practice for Updating a Live Edition” guide to help mitigate teething problems. The company plans to add a slew of post-launch capabilities such as the ability to sell individual articles to readers for a small fee via Google Checkout. As of right now, there is no doubt that Currents is aspiring to build on the success of popular social reading apps such as Flipboard, which was recently released for the iPhone.

Google Currents is available for download in Apple’s App Store and in the Android Market for users in the US. I’d highly recommend checking it out if you get the chance to. After doing so, share your thoughts and opinions below!
