Apple Breaks Black Friday Sales Records, iPhone 4S Sells Out in 75% of Stores
Black Friday produced nothing but Golden Delicious sales for Apple.
An internal memo leaked claiming Apple’s retail store sales volume was four times higher than normal and the company reached its sales goal by 7 p.m. Friday. Even more telling is Deutsch Bank analyst Chris Whitmore and his team’s findings.
Whitmore and his team surveyed 200 stores on Black Friday including nearly 100 Apple stores and more than 100 AT&T, Verizon, Best Buy, Walmart and Target stores. They found that 75% of Apple retail stores completely sold out of the iPhone 4S by the end of the day Friday. Apple managed to restock a considerable amount of their stores though, with only 30% of the same stores reporting they out of iPhone 4S stock on Saturday. Only 50% of AT&T store sold out by comparison with Verizon reporting similar shortages. Sprint was the only retailer able to maintain sufficient stock to meet demand.
A separate report by Gene Munster with Piper Jaffray polled Apple stores on Black Friday, but focused on iPad and Mac Sales. Munster found iPad sales were 68% higher than last year averaging 14.8 pads solder per hour, up from 8.8 iPads during Black Friday last year. Mac sales were up 23% compared to last year averaging 10.1 units per hour.
The data—what little we have—indicates Apple took Black Friday by storm proving demand for the company’s products is practically recession proof.

Wonder how many of those people who bought the 4S were unemployed and used a credit card.

Some better data would be actual handsets sold by each carrier.

I don't fully understand the statement of "14.8 iPads solder per hour, up from 8.8 iPads during Black Friday last year.", and I'm curious to know.Is it 14.8 per physical Apple store, during business hours, or else ?

It's all about the marketing for Apple. They purposely don't stock their store's that well just so they will "sell out" of inventory and then they sit back and read all of the articles written like this one which causes even more hype. It's a brillant strategy that obviously works.

Don't understand the significance in calling the next iphone the "5" when it's the 6th generation iphone...

In the third parargraph it says 14.8 pads solder per hour. Shouldn't it say 14.8 iPads sold per hour?

Wouldn't it make more financial sense to supply enough to "almost" run out?
Did you make same conclusion when Droid Bionic and Motorola Razr sold out?
Or did apple stifle the news outlets and prevent those statistics from being released?
Take another bong hit doooooood
