Default New comScore Study Shows Over 10% of U.S. Mobile Phone Users Use An iPhone

The popular research firm, comScore recently released the September 2011 mobile subscriber market share data for the United States. This report shows results in favor of Apple, considering that of the 234 million Americans who are of age 13 and older, 10.2% of them owned an iPhone during the third quarter, leaving Apple ranked as number 4 among the nation’s top device manufacturers.

This is the first time that the iPhone has gotten past the 10% milestone in the comScore metrics. It’s also important to note that this whole report is done before the release of the iPhone 4S, which makes the whole achievement more notable. Apple grew its share by 1.3% between June and September and happened to be one of the two companies (the other being Samsung) who did not lose market share during this time period.

As far as the other companies go, Samsung came in first with 25.3% share of the U.S. mobile subscribers, LG came in second with a 20.6% share, Motorola was third with a 13.8% share, Apple was fourth with a 10.2% share, and RIM came in fifth with a 7.1% share. When considering smartphones only, Apple and Google combined end up controlling three-quarters of the nation’s mobile platform market share. (Quite a feat albeit being obvious).

In the September quarter, Apple ended up growing 0.8% to end up account for 27.4% of the smartphone market in the contry, earning them the number 2 position. Apple ended up trailing Google, which led with a 44.8% platform share (up 4.5% from the June quarter). With all things considered, Apple is at a very good stage considering Google’s android platform has many more devices compared to the number of iPhones on the market. Both the platforms combined help make the United States the world’s most important market for smartphones as well. The data that comScore’s results provide tracks installed user base rather than new handset sales, which make it more reflective of real-world usage as well – but slower to respond to shifting market trends when compared to other similar studies.

All in all though, it is exciting to read about Apple’s growth. I personally can’t wait to see how the iPhone 4S changed things in the smartphone industry, considering it had the most successful launch when compared to any other iPhone.

I didn't realize how far ahead Android had gotten (yes, I realize it's on a bazlillion phones, blah blah, not my I am making the comment). 10% isn't shabby at all though for Apple, especially when comparing it to all of those other makers. Seems ALL phones are in this category, not just smartphones, and just about everyone on that chart (except RIM) makes dumb phones as well.

The fact Apple hadn't released a phone in over a year when the stats were taken is really impressive.

Ya i set my iphone aside for a while and picked up a 4G android... I was not impressed. Its amazing how much smoother and fluid the transitions between pages are on the iPhone vs an android.

I once prayed to God for an iPhone, but quickly found out He didn't work that way...so I stole an iPhone and prayed for His forgiveness.

So then I take you you wasn't impressed with the i4 either. that's understandable., I saw no reason to upgrade my i4 with a 4S either. by the time the i5 comes out, Ill see how it stacks up against the Galaxy S III.

for now., Im loving the hell outta my Galaxy S II.
