Default iOS 5 Gives Huge Boost to Hotmail

Strangely enough, iOS 5 has done a whole lot of good for Microsoft, particularly with regard to Hotmail. Thanks in no small part to how much easier it is to establish a variety of email accounts in iOS 5, Microsoft is seeing an unprecedented rush of new account sign-ups.

This week, Microsoft's Chris Jones admitted on the Windows Live Blog that a whopping two million iOS 5 users have already brought their Hotmail accounts over to their iDevices. All told, Microsoft is seeing about 100,000 new activations each and every day.

In terms of Hotmail connections to iOS 5 devices, most are on iPhones, "with over 60% on iPhone 4 and higher, and almost 25% on the new iPhone 4S," the post reads. Hotmail has also been optimized, naturally, for the Windows Phone, Nokia, BlackBerry, and Android devices.

Microsoft is essentially having the opposite experience with iOS 5 that rival Google is having. Earlier this week after debuting its long-awaited Gmail app for iOS 5, Google was forced to yank the app due to a number of bugs that impaired the smooth operation of the email app. It was an ugly start, indeed, to Gmail's official foray into iOS-land.

Just tested on an old hotmail account I rarely use and none of my emails are showing up even though set up was successful. Nothing lost, nothing gained.

I love hotmail on iOS 5. It's so much better then what it used to be. Now I don't have to login into Hotmail anymore to delete my read emails. I can do it directly from my phone.

I'm still on iOS 4.2.1, but I've had zero issues with my gmail, hotmail, and exchange emails. I use their services online, and I must say that the integrated iOS mail.app was a snap to set up and use.

What does iOS 5 change, if anything with mail? I set up the same accounts on my brother's iPhone - iOS 5 - and it was identical both in setup and use...

iOS 5 has an option for Hotmail in the Mail.app, iOS 4 didn't.

Hotmail works beautifully with iOS5, just like if it is part of iCloud. synching things in Windlows live calendar, contacts, reminders from the pc to iphone and vice versa are flawless, Hotmail also has Push, contrary to Gmail which requires opening the mail app. For notes, the OneNote app by microsoft in the Appstore works magically as apple would put it. The app synchs instantly changes from the OneNote desktop application or the web application within Windows live mail/hotmail, again, this is like iCloud lol. Hey check out this video, the feature in this video works the same way in the ios OneNote app

In the email settings you can configure to have non-push email accounts to fetch emails automatically every 15 mins, half our or hour.
