Google Finally Rolls Out Long Awaited Gmail App for Apple Devices
For iDevice users with Gmail accounts, today is your lucky day. On Thursday, Google (finally) released its official Gmail app for the full iDevice line - iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad.
In a blog post on the official Google Mobile Blog, Matthew Izatt, Product Manager for Google, makes the long-awaited Gmail app sound pretty nifty. "Weíve combined your favorite features from the Gmail mobile web app and iOS into one app so you can be more productive on the go," Izatt writes. "Itís designed to be fast, efficient and take full advantage of the touchscreen and notification capabilities of your device. And itís one more reason to switch to Gmail."
Based on the features teased, Google is obviously concerned with speed, as the people behind Gmail reveal that "We want to give you the information you need quickly, with minimal effort and distraction."
The features advertised include:
- Get alerted to new messages with push notifications and sounds
- Find an email in seconds with search across your entire inbox
- Autocomplete email addresses from your Gmail contacts or select from your deviceís address book
- Upload photos with a click using the new attachment button in compose view
- On iPad, navigate your inbox and read your mail simultaneously with split view
To get the app, click here (iTunes Link).

This will likely replace my mail app, assuming it gets to working as intended.

UPDATE The app has temporarily been pulled by Google due to a bug. "Unfortunately, it contained a bug which broke notifications and caused users to see an error message when first opening the app," Google says of the app. "We've removed the app while we correct the problem, and we're working to bring you a new version soon. Everyone who's already installed the app can continue to use it."

How did Apple miss that bug?

This could never replace the native app for me, even though I'm a longtime gmail enthusiast. I have 3 email accounts on my phone, only one of which is Gmail, and I'm not gonna have more than one mail app on my phone.Quaerite et invenietis.

Some people read the article before the *update was posted. Some people need think before they post.

Yeah I don't really see the need for this. I have 2 e-mail accounts on my phone (personal and work) and while both are Gmail (Google Apps for the work e-mail) I don't really think I would want to have to go through a separate app to get my mail.
And what about all the other stuff in iOS with "e-mail" buttons, would that also integrate with this app? Such as if I click the button in Grocery Gadget to e-mail the developers. Would that open this Gmail app or the stock mail app? I'm betting the stock mail app. What if I want to e-mail a photo from my Camera Roll? I open the photo, tap the icon at the lower left, and click the E-mail Photo button. What app does it open? Once again I'm betting the stock mail app.
If it doesn't integrate with * E V E R Y T H I N G * in iOS then it's really not worth it IMHO.

Any idea if this works with 3rd party authentication? Our Google Apps role out uses its own servers without SMTP for authentication., which doesn't work on the standard email app, and I don't trust out IT department not to wipe my phone on a whim!

Google will want people to use the app to get people viewing the ad's cause people like that use the iPhone mail app haven't been to the google site in months last time was to change a password!!

Google's Gmail is already built in the Choices for MAIL App in iOS why would they release their own app?
Extra app on iDevices takes up unnecessary space
