Custom Text tones without jailbreak - Since iOS 5.0 (2011)
It took Apple 4 years to finally incorporate a modern idea! I'm not the one for custom text tones though, the only time I will use a custom text tone is when my friend comes over and always brags about his Droid X. Whenever I get a text it goes "DROID!" and he get's angry about it. What can't an iPhone do? Haha.
Also check out audiko.net for custom ringtones/text tones for your iPhone, its quick and easy if you don't want to deal with converting and changing file extensions. (even though it's not that hard. )

Very cool that it now works for text tones. I've been using Audacity to create my own tones with effects (such as fade in & fade out) for a while now. Looks like I'll be making text tones soon!

Or after you jailbreak it, go to Cydia and download ringtones. Just sayin

I like Unlimitones because it allows you to edit the parts of the song you want to be your ring/text tone. It just cuts the section out you want and you can also edit to fade in and out so you don't get that loud harsh beginning or ending. It's pretty cool.

People, custom text tones are brand new in 5.0. Custom ringtones yes have been around for a while but text tones have not been on the iPhone. He was just bringing back a guide on how to do it for text tones.
Read the first couple sentences:

Thank you Cer0, that was getting annoying. Goes to show you how much people don't read the entire article. I for one have been doing this for a year.... With the help of a jailbreak. Lolz

I was able to get a MGS Codec ringtone on my phone as my text tone (to remove one more thing from the "ZOMG, i need untether jailbreak now!" list), but the jingle happens twice, not once; basically, I want to shorten it.I changed the extension to .mp3 to throw into GarageBand to shorten it, but GB says "nuh-uh, we can't use MP3s; are you kidding?". Well, when I made my custom ringtones using song snippets, they were MP3 files, so how is it GB can't do what it's supposed to?(slight off-topic post is off-topic).
[EDIT] Uhg. Nevermind. Figured it out.

Same here. Except I edit mine with Audacity, export as .m4a and change it to .m4r, then import into iTunes.

Alright, I'm stuck!
I was able to create a ringtone no problem, following the above procedure, BEFORE I updated to iOS 5.0 on my iPhone 4. Now, I don't seem to be able to. Everything works fine up until reopening the file in iTunes after converting to .m4r format. When I reopen in iTunes, the new .m4r version is nowhere to be seen, but the old .m4a version starts to play instead. The .m4r version is not in ringtones section either. I can't seem to solve it!
Much obliged if you can!

Afa, did you delete the original m4a from your iTunes library? If it is not completely removed, it will not appear as a ringtone but rather as the original file.
