Default Apple Doubles Down on iPhone Production for Second Half of 2011

Apple is ramping up iPhone production to a degree never before witnessed. That's according to the latest reports from Apple's manufacturing partners in the far east.

Between iPhone 5 production (just now swinging into full gear) and reports of a cheaper 8GB iPhone 4 coming for deployment in emerging new markets, Apple is believed to be on pace to double the total number of anticipated iPhone shipments through the end of 2011.

58 million units is the new estimate for both quarters (3 and 4) combined, says FBR Capital Markets analyst Craig Berger. "Third quarter iPhone builds were revised higher due to an additional 3.1M iPhone 4 builds (to 15.2M units) and due to an additional 1.4M iPhone 5 builds (to 6.8M units)," Berger said to investors. "We still see 3M builds planned on the legacy iPhone 3GS to satisfy demands from various US and European carriers calling for a low cost device to compete with Android handsets."

"We see most of the [fourth quarter] iPhone production on the iPhone 5 (23M units), as iPhone 4 production drops off dramatically," he added. "Apple's current build plan drives total production to 102M units in calendar 2011, and likely driving about 95M units of sales."

I wonder if the fact that alot of people are tied into a 2 year on an i4 if this will hurt the i5.

The jump from 3GS to i4 was pretty big and made quite a few people switch up. People that could now be contract tied...

Depends on what the iPhone 5 has in store. iPhone sales have increased yearly. I am not too terribly worried. If they replace their $50 3GS with a $50 iPhone 4, these things are going to be selling like hotcakes.

I once prayed to God for an iPhone, but quickly found out He didn't work that way...so I stole an iPhone and prayed for His forgiveness.

8 gig ? , I think Apple still has a stockpile of 8 gig that needs to be get rid off. With todays' apps, 8 gig is not sufficient at all.

Well 2 things can happen. They have a 3GS and their 2 yr contract is up so they can easily upgrade. The other is people willing to cough up the money to upgrade and buy out of the contract and set up a new one.

The 8 gig is speculation for the ever so popular rumor of the iPhone nano. Or more so the iPhone pay as you go plan. Bloomberg and cnet did another back from the rumor grave on this as well as a launch date of 5 Oct.
