I just got a text today saying they are updating my plan to a 4 GB tethering plan for $45 a month!! This will REPLACE my unlimited plan. After calling them and yelling I was told there is nothing they can do. The change will go on. They claim they can tell whether you are tethering or not. I have not purchased any software to allow tethering so therefore I do not tether. So beware!! They are being douche bags. Needless to say, I am not done fighting yet.

Well...this is unfortunate for those who paid for MyWi. Glad I just have an iPod touch and don't have to worry about data.

Those of you that are on Verizon and have their Unlimited plan should pay very close attention to this. I guarantee that Verizon does something very similar in the very near future now that there's a precedent for it.

I write Mac only tutorials for the iPhone and own every model. My iPhones run on the following SIMs/networks: AT&T, GoPhone, H2O, O2, SimpleMobile, T-Mobile and Verizon.

Ok, I have said it before and I will say it again, unlimited should mean unlimited. 10MB or 2TB should be no different under an unlimited plan.
Now, I personally use MyWi to tether all the time and I never received a text message about it. Of course, we are on a business contract that never made any mention about tethering one way or the other, so I wonder if that is the difference.

To all those complaining about AT&T being greedy and all, ready your effin contract. The unlimited data is for your iPhone. Not for your laptop and your desktop and your ipod touch and your friend's ipod touch and your girl friend's laptop......
Where do u guys live? Dont u have wifi or u just dont use wifi for some reason (just like my boss). He'll be in the office (with wifi) and not connect to it. I have absolutely no idea why. I dont wanna get fired so I never asked him.

APN used by MyWi
I've been keeping up on this thing since I've gotten the dreaded text from AT&T and I know for a fact that MyWi uses the same APN as teatherme/pdanet. I think that it's a matter of what iOS is on your phone, 4.2.1 on my brothers phone has never been told to stop tethering but mine on 4.3.3 has

That's not how MyWi works.
The APN used for tethering (broadband) is disabled by default on at&t's end unless a tethering plan is purchased. So, there's no way to enable 'broadband' APN to work without buying a tethering plan through at&t.
MyWi, TetherMe and PDANet all avoid this by using or allowing the default iPhone data APN (phone) to be used instead. So realistically, anyone using a means to tether without buying a plan is susceptible to this bull.
Then again, at&t sent emails and warnings to dozens that have never tethered but used lots of data. There's reports of this in previous posts about this issue in the last 10-12 months. So it's just another at&t tactic in getting rid of the unlimited plan because they don't want to pay to support it. Typical.
If at&t was really smart, they'd get rid of the 2G unlimited iPhone data plan loophole... seeing that is how most people are getting the unlimited plans again. But they probably won't, so smart people booted off their old plan will be back up & running on unlimited data quickly.Member of the hackint0sh forums.

EXACTLY!!! I JB and tether and have unlimited (which I've had since 2007 with my 2G) data. But I ONLY use about 200-300 each month on tethering and only for a short session here and there. This kind of usage AT&T doesn't have a problem with, and rightfully so. But there are those people out there (you know who you are) that ruin the party for everyone else. If you are using your tethered device like an always on home internet link then you deserve to pay more and get less. This is NOT home internet. 3G is NOT cable, dsl, or fiber. Please use some common sense and stop screwing the rest of us who use a reasonable amount of data. I am maintaining my unlimited plan but (even with tethering) I never go over 2GB in any given month (even with lots of Pandora, Logmein, Audiogalaxy, and tons of browsing).
And those people who think that "downloading lots of apps" eats up your data then you are either a) misinformed or b) actually downloading huge apps (think TomTom or something else over 1GB) and accordingly you should be paying more for the privilege of being too stupid to download apps that large at home like the rest of us do.They can have my jailbreak when they pry it from my cold dead fingers.

I got a text message a long time ago about me tethering. I have never tethered with pdanet since then mainly because I had to restore and I never redownloaded it. I better not be screwed over because I will go on a streak and blow up every single at&t store in this country.... lol I'm just kidding...... sort of.

$30 unlimited with (not AT&T!
) Verizon and I tether all the time. Then again I don't ever use more than 5GB a month so... The whole 10+ GB a month thing never made sense to me. Nobody has wifi nowadays? I spend a ton of time away from my home wifi, in fact I watch movies and videos for a few hours a day when I have no wifi 5 days a week and I still use less than 5GB. Like everyone else has said though, 20-30GB is a bit excessive and you can't expect a company to keep allowing this. Sure, it's "unlimited" but that doesn't mean you should abuse it. If a buddy of yours offered you unlimited gas from his gas station for $30 a month, and you go driving around your gas guzzler truck like crazy coming to get gas every other day I'm pretty sure your friend would tell you to quit it

Was there really a need for a third article/thread about AT&T taking people off of their unlimited plans for unauthorized tethering?
