Default Apple's New Love Affair with Unlocked iPhones Expands to India

In recent weeks, Apple has aggressively pursued new sales opportunities for its iPhone line by focusing on the opportunities born of making unlocked handsets more widely available in the US and beyond. Although the iPhone 4 only arrived in India (a mobile-phone-friendly community 1.2 billion strong) last month, Apple is ready to push the potential of unlocked devices within the country.

Hoping to better compete with rival devices running Android, an iPhone re-introduction of sorts is planned for India, reports IT Pro India this morning. According to the report:

Apple has divulged plans to re-launch its iPhone 3GS, which was then only available through network operators like Vodafone and Airtel. The new unlocked version will come with 8GB internal storage at a very reasonable price of Rs. 19,990.
As far as Apple is concerned, some are calling their efforts in India brilliant, as any action that reduces the cost of the iPhone and increases the options for carrier service only stands to help the touchscreen handset capture a bigger share of the Indian market - a market rife with big sales potential for all Apple products.

Two weeks ago, Apple surprised many by beginning to sell unlocked iPhone 4's (the GSM iPhone 4 models) through the company's online store, a development that is sure to push the number of T-Mobile iPhone users well past the one-million mark - the current number of iPhones in the US on the unofficial network.

Just last week, Apple reportedly made it possible for Apple Stores to unlock the full price AT&T version ($650 for the 16GB or $749 for 32GB) of the iPhone 4 at checkout.

Its a big market for cell phones. Even a homeless has a cell phone there. I remember my first cell phone in India was in 1996 somewhere. I had a big brick like handset made of Sanyo. I was the only one in the city to have it.
Anyway, the only way to kill apple's iphone - eg. Samsung - rather than getting out new phone every month, have only phone in the market and give software updates regularly with new features all the time. The biggest problem with Nokia, motorla, samsung and other companies is that they come out with new phone every month but do not provide a software update regularly. Instead of software update with new features they just come out with the new handset. Remember, its the operating system iOS that people like in iPhone not the handset itself. If you put the same operating system in new Sensation phone or g2x people would start using those phones eventually. Ofcourse do some changes in the design too. Like G2X has a HDMI port. What a good feature is that and no other phone has. So instead and along with bringing another phone give software updates to G2X.
Remember, its the operating systems that sell eg, windows, symbian, iOS, Linux, Java etc etc.

wow...hapishyguy tried really hard there didnt he?! maybe coz hes from earth???

    :P

anyway, what hes saying is partly true. india is a massive massive market. apple how only begun to scrape it surface. all they need is to launch stuff here at the same time as they do in the rest of the world - and NOT a year later - and offer good service backup. the iphone has huge potential. these samsung and lg idiots have NO idea how to do this right, especially since they think people in india are idiots and will buy anything packaged in a fancy ad.
