Google Swiffy Turns Flash Files Into HTML5 Goodness
Google may have created the death knell for Adobe's Flash, but for now the interesting piece of code known as Swiffy, that can easily convert Flash files into HTML5 friendly ones, remains locked up in the Google vault.
Swiffy allows Flash authors to run flash code through it, and splits it into a JSON file, then renders it with HTML, scalable vector graphics, and cascading style sheets (CSS). The resulting files are only slightly larger and have rendering performance that is "quite good," according to Google.
The funny thing is this program was specifically states that it lets developers "reuse Flash content on devices without a Flash player (such as iPhones and iPads)." It seems odd Apples most direct competitor in the mobile OS field would actively support their devices like this. However, don't expect Swiffy to work miracles and convert complex Flash applications into working HTML5 code.
The world is still one step closer to a Flash free world. I can sleep easier at night knowing that.
Or not, especially if my roommate keeps sneaking his ventriloquist doll into my room in the middle of the night.
