Report: Sprint Actively Testing iPhone 4S Ahead of September Launch
Reports surfaced Monday that Sprint has entered into an active test phase for the next generation iPhone - the so-called iPhone 4S. All signs now point to a September release of the the 5th generation handset which is now almost universally believed to be a hybrid unit capable of working on both CDMA and GSM networks. If reports are accurate, the iPhone 4S would initially run on Sprint's 3G wireless network, not Sprint's considerably faster WiMax.
Sprint carrying the iPhone has been among the hottest rumors in mobile since the previous biggest rumor - the iPhone coming to Verizon - became reality earlier this year. Beginning on the very afternoon of the Verizon iPhone announcement, speculation started to swirl that Sprint was all but certainly going to offer the iPhone, likely even before year's end.
"Not having an iPhone puts Sprint at a competitive disadvantage," Jack Gold, an analyst at J.Gold Associates, tells ComputerWorld today. "Sprint currently doesn't have a 'halo effect' device, even though they have tried with devices like the HTC Evo and now the coming Motorola Photon."
Lat month, Jeffries analyst Peter Misek said that the iPhone 4S would sport the A5 dual-core processor (same as iPad 2); boast an 8MP camera, work with Sprint, T-Mobile USA and China Mobile; and would be HSPA+ capable. Reports from around the industry, including those from Reuters Reuters, maintain that production on the next-generation iPhone will commence in July.

Sounds good to me! I'm not really sure how great of a decision the "exclusivity deal" was with AT&T but it definitely put the other cellular providers in the rearview for awhile. Now that everyone in "the game" will have the iPhone, this should hopefully speed up iPhone enhancements and that is good for EVERYONE

Off Topic: I hate the new ModMyi layout.
On Topic: I hope that Sprint gets this phone just so my friend who "hates" Apple now has a temptation to get an iPhone.

Sprint being Sprint puts Sprint at a competitive disadvantage. As for the exclusivity deal; it was a very smart move for Apple to do that because it pretty much guaranteed them a good amount of exposure and a limited area of competition because the carrier that signed the deal didn't want to cannibalize sales of any of their smartphones in lieu of another.
Now that the iphone had established itself, Apple was smart to branch off and go to the other carriers in a kind of "now do you believe in us?" sort of way.
Apple is in a position to have an "iphone in every hand" success story if they keep doing things right. I just hope Steve Jobs' health keeps up and he can be around for a while to keep things running smoothly at Apple. Oh and I hope they stop fighting so much with us jailbreakers cause there are SO many things I've done to my iphone that I wouldn't have been able to if it weren't for the iphone dev team, george hotz, etc. and for that, I thank you.

Yeah that's the dilemma I'm kinda facing with my and my wife's 3GS phones. Do we get refurb'd iP4's on the cheap now and wait for 2012's version with hopefully a larger screen to come out? Or do we wait a bit longer now and get the 4S/5 when it comes out (which at least should have the better processor and larger memory). If the former, then it may end up being like 2013 or something before we upgraded from the iP4. If the latter, then we'll end up being at least a year or two behind everyone else getting the larger screen (if 2012's version does have that).
We don't change phones every 6 months or a year, so yeah that's what we're facing.

Lets display an outdated picture of an old iPhone and fail to proof-read an article once again before posting it!! Apparently rushing the article is more important that the quality these days???
Just throw up a picture of an old iphone with a poor photoshop job and fail to proof-read the article before posting...... seems like a great idea. Apparently it's more important to rush the article and get it out faster than anyone else rather than take another minute or so to do a proper job these days...
