Default Behind The Code: Dan Zimmerman (@DanZimm)

Behind The Code is back and ready to rock. ModMyi has had the honor of talking with the following people:

    Luke (@qwertyoruiop)
    Elias Limneos (@limneos)
    Christian Heusinger (@iRealSMS)
    Grant Paul (@chpwn)

Let us continue this streak with another prominent developer and hacker: Dan Zimmerman (@DanZimm).

Creator of Vibrafications, Circuitous, and others, Dan was gracious to speak with ModMyi and I'm excited to bring him your story. Set tight and let's go right into the world of Dan Zimmerman.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------

JOSH: Tell us a little about yourself. Your age, location, and education (if applicable).
DAN: First off, I'm 17 years old and live in a suburb out of Chicago. I like playing my guitar, riding my BMX bike, and I'm just a pretty normal teen. I'm currently in high school I LOVE math.

JOSH: How'd you first get involved in the jailbreak community? How long have you been a part of it?
DAN: I have been slightly apart of the community since 1.1.4 on the iPod Touch 1. I jailbroke my first device with ziphone and I thought it was pretty cool. At the time, I wasn't a developer and was pretty ignorant to the whole developing aspect. I drifted away from the jailbreak community when 2.0 came out and went into the app world. I had an pp review site called Zym Blog but it was a total failure. When 3.0 came out, I came back. I didn't really start coding until the Christmas before last. It was around the time ProSwitcher by Grant Paul (@chpwn) and Ryan Petrich (@rpetrich) was being developed. That was the first code I really ever looked at. I learned off rpetrich and he's like a god to me. Literally everything I know is because of a couple developers, rpetrich, alajama, and ashikase (@ashikase). ashikase's open source code helped me out a lot while alajama, rpetrich, and Dustin Howett (@DHowett) were great IRC helpers.

My first big hit was Circuitous and I'm thinking about bringing it back again. I was a bit frustrated though because 4.0 brought App Switcher which is basically the same thing. From here, I started working with Evilpenguin (@EvilPenguin_). We have had some good times, bad times, and it's been a roller coaster ride.

I left again for a while when 4.3 came out and now I'm returning for 5.0. I am a little disappointed though because one of my projects, Vibrafications, was taken by Apple. It was extremely frustrating because this is the second time something like this has happened. This has brought me to a point where I might leave the community for good. However, the community as a whole is great and has some of the nicest groups of people out there.

JOSH: What other tweaks/applications have you created or worked on?
DAN: I have worked/created iAccounts, AppLocket, Circuitous, Badges, Vibrafications, and libdisplaystack (which is a library for developers).

JOSH: What Cydia tweaks/applications can you not live without?
DAN: It depends; before 5.0 it was just Vibrafications. For 5.0, I'm happy with being stock iOS.

JOSH: Are you currently working on any other projects? Are you willing to speak about them?
DAN: I have an App Store app I'm working on called Sluzzle, which in my mind, is a pretty addicting game. I'm also working on a special project with the iRealSMS team but I can't speak about the details of it. Otherwise, I have nothing else on my plate. On the side, I'm doing a little contract web work for random people.

JOSH: Is there someone in the community has been your inspiration or mentor through your entire career as a jailbreak developer?
DAN: Yes, definitely Ryan Petrich <3.

JOSH: So now that WWDC has passed, what were your impressions?
DAN: iOS 5 is really nice. I am a little mad that it kind of ruined a lot of deserving developers work and project development. Overall though iOS 5 is pretty smooth. I don't think any users should be on it right now though; I'm just using it to test my game Sluzzle.

JOSH: What potential do you see in the jailbreak community in light of iOS 5?
DAN: There will always be a group that's re-engineering an OS to their own tastes. For this reason, the jailbreak will never die in my opinion.

IMO that was a not so interesting interview. I'm sure there are plenty other jailbreak developers that could provide a better interview.

That's pretty harsh Striknine. There are a lot of people that help out behind the scenes and just are not as familiar in the jailbreak scene. Dan is on the IRC channels all the time and not only has he made some great breakthroughs and applications but he is always there to lend a hand to other developers.
Tell you one thing, Dan Zimmerman is coming out of his shell and should be developing an app/tweak with me & @iRealSMS that I'm sure will impress. Dan has a lot of potential and is agressivly productive when he puts his mind and heart into something.
    Great interview Josh!
Shame on anyone who puts down any developer whom is trying to make the jailbreak scene and iPhone experience better.

Thanks man, all true. And what reznor, Dan, and iRealSMS have coming up will make you pretty excited. Hopefully they'll have it preview ready soon for me.

I for one love these interviews. Gives us a chance to see what kind of people are coding the tweaks we love. I don't care if he hasn't coded the next BIG app or tweak yet or he doesn't have some exciting background story like the facebook guy. He is an up and comer. Give him some encouragement guys and lets see what these guys are capable of. Without them we have nothing but what apple decides to give us

Well said, I totally agree. Encouragement and support is what gets people to develop and strive for higher excellent. Many of the greatest inventors and designers in history made what they did because of those who backed them.

*Yawn* ... This interview can be resumed as follows:

"My name is Dan Zimmerman. I like rpetrich's and ashikase's work. I'm bummed that Apple stole my ideas and I'm giving up. The end."
