iPhone Getting Qualcomm Augmented Reality Software Kit

Beginning this summer, developers will be able to use Qualcomm tools to write augmented reality apps for the iPhone. The move comes one year after Qualcomm released some pretty impressive - and free - software tools for Android. Now, iOS devs can capitalize on the "kit" in question, a development that will likely provide no shortage of incentive behind the more routine creative of iOS augment reality applications.

“We realize it is a complex ecosystem with multiple operating systems,” Qualcomm’s Jay Wright told All Things Digital this week. “Developers need tools and technology that address that challenge.”

Now, Qualcomm will provide even more of those aforementioned tools - yes, still for free - to iOS developers eager to plunge into the burgeoning world of augmented reality.

Apparently, it doesn't matter to Qualcomm that its chips don't power the iPhone like they do for Android. For Qualcomm, it's all about infusing more opportunities and access into the app developing community. “Android was a logical starting point because of developer momentum and Snapdragon penetration,” Wright said. “Moving forward we will support additional operating systems.”

Although it isn't yet clear what the future of augmented reality holds for iOS, it's clear that Qualcomm is all about AR. Just last month, in fact, Qualcomm teamed with tech entrepreneur Mark Cuban, owner of the NBA's Dallas Mavericks, to provide basketball fans a ticket-based AR gaming experience. Ever since, the Mavs have been steamrolling their way toward the NBA Finals. Of course, augmented reality probably had very little to do with that accomplishment
