Apple To Embrace Smaller, Standardized SIM Cards

According to comments made by an Orange executive to Reuters this morning, Apple is looking to embrace a standardized SIM card that is considerably smaller than those presently used in the iPhone and iPad. The reason? Apple will then be able to produce even thinner iDevices.
On the other hand, just because Apple will have more space available inside of iOS devices doesn't mean they will choose to make the devices smaller. The additional space could easily be absorbed by a larger battery (something many iOS fans will likely support) or other tweaked and embellished components.
"We were quite happy to see last week that Apple has submitted a new requirement to (European telecoms standards body) ETSI
for a smaller SIM form factor -- smaller than the one that goes in iPhone 4 and iPad," said Anne Bouverot, Orange's head of mobile services. "They have done that through the standardization route, through ETSI, with the sponsorship of some major mobile operators, Orange being one of them," she added.
Of course, the plan is yet to manifest in reality. For now, officials for Orange reiterate the importance of patience, as it will likely take a substantial period of time before future generations of iPhones and iPads will actually sport the revamped SIM cards, which likely won't debut until 2012 at the absolute earliest.

Smaller sim? I'm sure there will be regular size adapters for older phones.

Because there is never enough.
That is like asking you look rich enough, why do you want more money.

Why not? I don't think more would be excessive. It's not like we have a trillion dollars and are drooling for two trillion. It seems like we have a couple thousand and could use a little more for a comfortable buffer.
I go most days without running a charge, but some days I find myself at 70% before I even really start using the phone to procrastinate.

Apple's goal should be to make the iPhone as slim as the iPod Touch 4. It feels so much better in the hand than the "iBrick" that is the new iPhone.

Standardized? Only good when all simcards are of the same standard...

I would hate the iPhone if it were as thin as an iPod touch.
