GoFlex Satellite Offers Wireless Storage for iDevices

On Monday, the team at Seagate raised the curtain on a new product that may be of interest to many iOS device users. This week the company is kicking off a press push for its GoFlex Satellite mobile wireless storage, a first of its kind battery-powered external hard drive that - as you may have guessed from its title - wirelessly extends the storage capacity of any Wi-Fi enabled mobile device.
From the gadget's spec sheet:With 500GB and Wi-Fi access over 802.11 b/g/n and a rechargeable battery, this latest member of the GoFlex family provides the ability to carry an entire library of video, music, pictures and documents with you.
- Take more than 300 HD movies on-the-go1
- Stream media over Wi-Fi to 3 iPads at the same time
- Automatically sync media and documents from your PC or Mac computer
- Up to 5 hours battery life
According to Seagate, your iDevice can be wirelessly connected directly to the GoFlex Satellite drive via the GoFlex Media app, which is both free and available now on iTunes and in the App Store. There are no reviews yet for this nifty little gadget, as the GoFlex Satellite just went on sale for preorder today for the suggested retail price of $199.99. But it's expected to become a pretty hot commodity in the iOS world by the time it hits stores like Best Buy in July. Global availability, the company says, is planned for later this summer.
"With the growth of the tablet and iPad markets and the larger volumes of high-quality media now being consumed, there is a clear need for access to content that is not plagued with the challenges of streamed video over the Internet," said Patrick Connolly, vice president and general manager of Seagate's retail group. "The unfortunate fact is that these popular new mobile devices are hampered by their limited storage capacity while one of their primary functions is that of media consumption."

Bad thing is you will not be able to surf the net while connected to via WiFi. If you are a.d.d. then it's annoying but if not this it's no prob.

I would consider using this with an iPad, but I don't use my phone enough to need all that extra space.

I'm sort of surprised that there aren't more devices like this out there. Another one I was looking at buying is AirStash: wireless flash drive + pocket media server + SD adapter for iPhone, iPod touch & iPad

It's would be better for it to be Bluetooth that way you could surf the web at the same time.

I travel a lot overseas. This would be good if the battery life could match the iPad's.

Pretty cool. I wish the battery would last a bit longer though.

That's cool but the storage is a little excessive. give me an extra 64GB for much less and I'll be a happy camper.
