Default T-Mobile Customers May Be Left Waiting a Year for The iPhone

On Sunday, AT&T shocked the mobile community with its out-of-left field announcement that the company plans to acquire T-Mobile USA, a move that effectively reduces the number of major US carriers to three: AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint. But while the announcement seemingly heralded the imminent availability of the iPhone to T-Mobile customers, there may be a longer lag time than initially anticipated for this reality to manifest.

After the announcement of the acquisition was made, T-Mobile revised its FAQ page to address some of the hottest new questions on the minds of current and prospective customers. "T-Mobile USA remains an independent company," the FAQ was revised to state. "The acquisition is expected to be completed in approximately 12 months. We do not offer the iPhone. We offer cutting edge devices like the Samsung Galaxy S 4G and coming soon our new Sidekick 4G."

Analysts concur that the iPhone may not be available for at least twelve months, as the regulatory process for the acquisition will be lengthy. Of course, it is also possible that the acquisition will not be sanctioned by federal regulators. If approved, however, AT&T and T-Mobile should have little trouble merging technologies to bring the iPhone to all 130 million users in the AT&T family. But it's going to take some time.

all that tmobile customers do anyway is wait. unlocks, etc.

    IT'S MANBEARPIG!
I told you it was real!

    Device: iPhone 2G 16 GB
    Firmware: 2.2.1 Unlocked + Jailbroken w/ Quickpwn.
Computer: Windows XP & Vista (64 Bit)

  3. #3
That's not surprising. Why offer a tmobile iPhone when tmobile is dead.

  4. #4
Well, IF the merger goes through, we will be cancelling with AT&T/T-Mobile (I can't stand AT&T's poor customer service, I put up with it at work, because it is what they have chosen, but I will not use it personally).

I am holding out hope that the authorities will completely block such a merger under anti-trust laws.

It will be nicer to have a better signal where T-Mo was good at. No problems with AT&T just pay your bill on time and no issues
    Dont be that guy..!!!

So... Will the spots T-Mobile already covers get double coverage? Full bars in most places?

I completely agree, I'm praying the FCC or DOJ blocks the merger. I still don't understand why ANY tmobile customers are excited about this, the call quality will go down and the customer service quality will go down, the only this going up will be our bills.

Less competition = companies can charge whatever the hell they want

Well wouldn't the FCC have to block all merges then?

Maybe the new commercial will have the T-Mobile chick shaking hands with the AT&T guy...or maybe they will cut to the chase and show her in bed with him....

Also, you can use T-Mobile right now with a jailbroken/unlocked iphone.
We don't need to wait for them to offer it.

Just like "2006yamahaR6" said before that less companies mean less competition and less competition means companies can charge people anything they want. As I always say that this is all a controlled market. They say freedom of this, freedom of that. Hell! there is no freedom!
Those who think that its a good thing just because of iPhone, you are wrong. The customer service will go down. If you call customer service to get a discount or reverse a charge you will be denied on your face and there will be nothing you could do. Admit it! Before TMobile used to give you credits just to keep you one of the reason being that they didnt had the iphone.
Remember, before it was 2 GSM companies and now its only 1. So there is monopoly.
Last year I was in India and there are so so many companies competing with each other to get customers. I remember when the first time cell phone came to India around 14 years ago there was only 1 company called "Spice" and the per minute charge was Rs 30 and no free minutes. I used to use my cell phone only in emergency. And now with so many companies and 4 more coming next year the per minute has dropped to .50 paise (google it find out if you wanna know how much it is equilent to USD. This is called competition.
Remember again, its only one GSM company in US now and they can and WILL do whatever the heck they want to. Before you had the option to switch to tombile or at&t or vice versa if you didnt like one company but now what? Where would you go?
    I totally agree with "2006yamahaR6"

ATT has said they will repurpose the t-Mobile towers to 4G...so I would suspect that once the deal closes ATT would be happy to convert you to an ATT phone (maybe even sooner?)

Who knows...maybe T-mobile will let you out now with no penalty.

that's because their next big move will be pushing Android to the front and the iphone to the back. it only makes sense since Android is outgrowing Apple.
