Apple Working on Smaller, Cheaper iPhone to Compete with Android

Thats stupid. If anything, Apple should release a larger iPhone (maybe with 4" screen) to compete with Android! Most Android phones have larger screens than the iPhone and thats what I would like better. The display could even stay the same resolution as the iPhone 4 because it's already a higher res than Android phones.

Won't happen. 3.5" is already small(that's what she said?). There was the same rumour like 2 years ago. Apple will release only one iPhone a year.

For people complaining about a $200 iPhone, I just have to ask one thing. Seriously?! $200 is a reasonable price for a phone that can do as much as an iPhone. People on T-Mobile and carriers were you can't sign a contract for an iPhone pay MORE than that, and have to deal with the BS of unlocking.

The carriers can give iPhones away for free if they want. All business are out to make $$, so don't expect **** for free

Apple would be stupid to release a cheaper iPhone. Why? Because iPhones are selling strong, so they're going to keep the same price until demand falls, or a better phone comes out from one of Apple's competitors. Apple is in business to make $. Selling products cheaper means less $.

Apple is looking to make money. It would be expensive to manufacture 3 products that essentially did the same thing. iPhone for GSM, iPhone for CDMA, and mini iPhone. Remember they would have to program more in the iOS for each variation. Idealistically they will make 1 iPhone. The technology is there in VZW iPhone to operate as a world phone. Considering the LTE network requires a SIM card to use, both VZW and Apple are going to need it.

Unless the cost to manufacture a world iPhone is extremely high, Apple will take the cheapest route to create 1 phone. This is from the business side of the stick. Of course there could be a technological problem preventing us from seeing a world iPhone.

Also last summer I remember reading an article eerily similar to this one, and perhaps modmyi even posted it. Basically saying a smaller iPhone was going to be created for VZW exclusively. Here I thought once the Apple iPhone release the rumor mill would die out.

A smaller iPhone could be kinda cool/cute but only 1/3 of the original size? That's like going from an iPod to a iPod nano...that just seems like it would be way to small. I wouldn't go any smaller then a 3" screen, otherwise you might as well get a BlackBerry then!

The article says 1/3 smaller, NOT 1/3 the size. I would assume that means the face area would be 66.6% the size of a current iPhone. Which means each side would possibly be .816 as long as the current iPhone. If it was 1/3 smaller by volume that number would be even higher.

If u take an iPad that is a third smaller it's still gonna be bigger than the galaxy tab by a descent margin (8-8.5 inch).

Actually by a smaller iPhone they mean a dumb iPhone. It's gonna be a phone made by apple that probably has music and photos for multimedia and maybe a camera. It won't have the amazing apps that the current i devices have. It's like Mac to iPhone to mini iPhone. Less functionality and by no means a smartphone.

I think the mini iPhone is to compete in the messaging phones category and not the smartphone category of the iPhone and android. Apple just won't be able to make a smartphone for $200

This article is misleading at best. Apple's market share is a solid 16% by ONE company for both OS and handset. Google may have 32% by OS, but the devices are scattered across multiple handset makers. I guess that's the benefit of giving your OS away for free.

Not saying the android OS isn't good, just that this article leaves out that small, but important detail.

Android is sold by every Carrier on the planet that sells a Smart phone.

Iphone is two carriers in the US and a few in Europe

Its Apple's fault no one else to blame, with less control Iphone and IOS would be wider used.

The iPhone is on a lot more than just two U.S carriers and a few in Europe.
It's on 83 carriers in 35 countries in Europe, many countries also sell it factory unlocked so it's also on more carriers than listed. Every network that sells Android in Ireland and U.K also sells iPhone.
Please see Locating iPhone wireless carriers for the entire global list of iPhone carriers, looks to me that iPhone is also sold on pretty much every carrier on the planet, minus a few U.S carriers.
