I was trying to update to 4.2.1 last night on my iPhone 4, using Tiny Umbrella to preserve the baseband. No matter what I did, though, I couldn't get the phone out of recovery mode after the fact. Tiny Umbrella would kick it out of recovery, only for it to come back up after. I finally just rolled back to 4.0.1.

As the other thread is so long and my post probably wont get read I'll post it here and hopefully it'll help others.
With the first release of GP I couldn't get the iPad to jailbreak. It kept coming up with an error then GP said it failed.
The latest version (v4) worked nicely. It still came up with the same error but it passed it this time.
I also got the waiting timeout 60000 error but just waited and it also passed that too.
So anyone having trouble with the first GP release try this one and it should work now.

The error code usually has to do with your host file on your computer. If you have ever used or ran Tiny umbrella it will change your host file. even if you haven't used TU a common fix is to go to your host file on your computer, drag the host file to your desktop, open as administrator and delete anything related to GS.APPLE, save the host file and place it back where you got it from. Then open itunes and try again.
Yes, that's all you have to do.Last edited by shawnmars; 02-07-2011 at 08:52 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

tried to update to 4.2 with itunes and now i have a phone that goes from trying to update to a brick. after the attempted update, i get a 1013 error and I get the connect to itunes message on my phone. tried this 3 times and once I updated it on a different computer, it updated.
Gonna try JB again

There will not be a separate host file for apple. All you look for in the host file is if it has: 74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com or you see. #127.0.0.1 gs.apple.com then delete those entries and save, then reboot and start iTunes. the only other thing is make sure the Internet options say No Proxy and not autodetect proxy. otherwise I don't know what else to do
That's awesome, glad you got it, ENJOYLast edited by shawnmars; 02-07-2011 at 10:48 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

For those that want to preserve their basement on the i4 follow this.
First you will need to get the latest version of tinyumbrella.
Second download firmware 4.2.1 not from iTunes but from other sources ( google it )
Third make sure shh blob is saved with tinyumbrella.
Fourth run tinyubrella server.
Fifth open iTunes and do not I repeat do not us update do a restore this is way you need to download 4.2.1.
Sixth when ITunes is done you will get a error 1013 it's ok. Yes tinyumbrella will not kick i4 out of recovery.
Seventh this is where you use GP to get you i4 out of recovery. Follow the instructions on GP and bam your i4 is JB and out of recovery and your Baseband is preserved.
I can't take credit for this since I found this on the internet. Still on Baseband 1.59.0
