it doesnt really matter, all that matters is that you enter dfu.

Okay so I did the step with redsnow and now its rebooted, do I still need to go back and do greenpois0n again for untethered? or is that going to stay?

...also when it allowed me to get back into homescreen again, I went to cydia and the screen flickered and the apple logo and loading bar came on it while cydia was loading....is something wrong with the phone?

No, you should be fine. Dont worry about that flicker thing, it happens sometimes. Just install any updates cydia has, reboot and you should be good.

That just means it doesnt hacitvate. So if you dont have a official carrier sim to get past the emergency call screen then use redsnow to hactivate.

I by no means want to mislead any body on here but for me once the screen went white gp said jailbreak complete and i kept holding the home button(because thats whats workin for everyone else) but my phone stayed at connecting to itunes sceen. from there just rebooted(hold home and sleep till apple logo appears)and ran gp again till screen turned white again and let off home button. Imediatly screen went to black screen w tiny lettering in upper left hand corner then the scrolling text. let that run then ran loader and installed Cydia! Been showing my daughter stuff in Cydia ever since!

You cannot power it down when connected to a power source. it will always restore. Just put it in dfu, you dont need to turn it off first. Hold home and power 10 seconds then continue holding home.
