"Jailbreak Monte" Ported to iOS 4.1, 4.3 Is Next

MuscleNerd announced last night that the he has successfully ported the Monte untether to use iOS 4.1 blobs. This means that there is no need to burn an exploit to jailbreak iOS 4.2.1, and that the new greenpois0n previewed by Chronic Dev might be held in reserve. It also resolves ongoing concerns about SHSH piracy that have created controversy in the jailbreak community.
The "Jailbreak Monte" method is a way to recycle exploits by convincing the device that it's running a given firmware right up to the pwnage step, then switching to the newer firmware thereafter. Currently, you need to have an iOS 4.2b3 SHSH blob - which only people in the developer program legitimately have access to - in order to jailbreak 4.2.1 untethered using Monte. When the next version of redsn0w is released, you'll only need iOS 4.1 SHSH blobs, which redsn0w will fetch for you whether or not you'd backed yours up: Apple is still giving those to everyone from their servers. EDIT 01/23/11: Note: Apple is NOT actually giving out 4.1 blobs anymore.
Encouragingly, MuscleNerd says that Monte is a lot more versatile than even he had though, noting that he "had seriously overcomplicated things before today." The team is currently working on porting Monte forward to 4.3, which would make "ultra-recycle" even more green than it is today.

Good news. Don't burn a exploit if we don't need to

Is this already functional for 4.2.1? Or am I misreading something? Hope it is otherwise I'll just wait some more.

Kinda great news for my iPhone 4.. but not so much for my iPodTouch 4g.. Since I cannot save the 4.1 SHSH blobs..

It says... "you need to have an iOS 4.2b3 SHSH blob" I have been saving my blobs since I was able to. When I start Cydia it shows a list of firmwares listed at the very top. I had always assumed that those were the versions that I had saved from my own iPhone. Is this correct? If so, I have 4.2b3 saved. I am not a dev, how is this possible?

For whatever the reason, the updates had a different number since iOS4. 4.1 showed as 4.0 and 4.2 shows as 4.1.

Apple is still signing 4.1 blobs? Tiny Umbrella can't fetch them for me (I got my Touch with 4.1 on, but after 4.2.1 was released)

Because as of November Apple is not signing iOS4.1, which means that you're not able to save blobs for that version of iOS. TinyUmbrella saves all the available blobs for your device if Apple is still signing them. Right now, 4.2.1 is the only firmware that Apple is accepting/signing. Which means, even if you're on 4.1 TinyUmbrella will NOT save your 4.1 blobs. The same goes for 3.2.2 (iPad) and any other firmware below 4.2.1.

Nice! Glad Musclenerd was able to figure it out. Seems like 4.2.1 will be taken care of shortly with an official redsn0w release and maybe even 4.3 if it works as planned. Time will tell.

Yup, somehow Cydia and TinyUmbrella start saving all SHSH Blobs even for firmwares that you haven't even installed. In my case, my iPhone4 has only had iOS 4, 4.0.1, 4.1 and now 4.2.1; but I have blobs for 4, 4.0.1, 4.0.2, 4.1, 4.2b3 and 4.2.1. If your iPhone 4 was jailbroken in or before November 2010 and Cydia was "making your life easier" you should have blobs for 4.1 and 4.2b3 saved. In my case I used JailbreakMe.com back in September and I have all those blobs I mentioned saved.

So this does nothing for anyone new to the jailbreak scene if they've never saved a blob, or even jailbroke a phone in the past. Not that great if this ONLY affects those already into currently jailbreaking their phones, or anyone that jailbroke 4.0.1 and stayed there.

Ok, so with my 1 week old iPhone 4, 4.2.1, tethered JB, with only 4.2.1 blobs saved, does this mean that a JB will be available for me?
