Yeah; this is an Epic Fail... Verizon's network without LTE is a fail.

They should have just waited a few more months and did a LTE version. They aren't going to steal sales away from At&t; it's the exact same thing; just missing some key features, example: data + voice at the same time. Which is the major downfall to the CDMA network in general.

No one is going to want to switch to Verizon and pay more money for a lesser network.

    End of story

    Yes.

The first iPhone didn't have 3G and was sold at full retail. It sold like nothing else. And said "lesser" network has more coverage than AT&T so for people who simply don't have the option of AT&T this is wonderful news.

Theoretically, YES! I would imagine the mobile hotspot feature turns the phone app completely off. Plus, I have feeling the mobile hotspot feature isn't free. They never said it was free

Don't be too dazzled by the wifi hotspot ability, because if you're using it, you can't make calls.

The iPhone itself has been able to do this from the beginning, you just need a jailbreak app to make use of this ability. MyWi, which is highly praised, will allow this to work, though I have not experimented with it myself.

Bottom line: GREAT! Now the whiners can go home! No more, "yeah but their network sucks," or "I won't go to AT&T," or "Verizon is faster" (complete fallacy.) It can actually be about phone vs phone, rather than phone vs network, like it's supposed to be when comparing smartphones.

Maybe now we shall truly see which is the smartphone to rule them all, minus petty network arguments...

Not to mention, the added competition for AT&T will FORCE them to adjust their service plans, because now iPhone users won't be stuck with AT&T. This last point is the biggest piece of joy coming from the VZ-iPhone release for me. Maybe we can get tethering with unlimited data for $60/mo now, without jailbreaking.

I just called and complained and got unlimited and tethered data from AT&T for the same deal as my 2GB plan. I think they know a mass exodus is coming.

It doesn't turn the phone off, it'll simply kill data if you get a call.
It'll be $20 on top of data charges.

Doing a carrier unlock for a GSM phone is completely different than making one CDMA phone compatible on a different CDMA network. Completely different types of technology.
That's not what he's saying. He's saying since the deal is not exclusive to Verizon CDMA, Sprint may try and get on board. Apple would then make the phone for Sprint. No hacking/flashing etc.

I'll stick with my JB'd GSM iPhone with MyWi. I don't like the idea of downgrading to an iPhone which I have to pay to tether to on any network. Heck, even if/when the Verizon iPhone 4 is JB'n and MyWi is ported over I still don't want to not be able to use voice and data simultaneously. That really is a bummer for me and may even be a deal breaker.

So is verizon going to allow FaceTime over 3G? I hope so. Just one more thing to hammer AT&T with

This is not news, this is simply how CDMA works and Verizon's plans cost. They've made no indication they're changing anything for the iPhone.

You can not unlock a verizon phone to work on sprint, this is not like GSM. CDMA carries have a special firmware so if you want to transfer a phone from verizon to sprint, you need to flash a specific carrier firmware that will change the ESN which is kinda like IMEI, so it is not legally possible and it is not like blackberry that you can clone a firmware from a sprint BB

CDMA+EvDO Rev. A = Failure the most they'll see is like 1.3mb... Where's their Data & Talk at the same time?

CDMA+LTE = Success... Oh well I guess they will have to wait another year.

I'm seeing an average of 2.5megabits up and down on my iPhone 4.

So they'll have better sound than us on GSM and a bigger network, but it will be slower.

I've never been on Verizon or had a CDMA smart phone. My first smart phone was a Samsung Blackjack back when 3G was first introduced on AT&T. I'm never using a smart phone that can't simultaneously use voice and data. MyWi while talking to a client equals $$$ for me. Nuff said
