Trimensional Brings 3D Scanning to the iPhone
[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IEZtiDrxh-E&feature=player_embedded]YouTube - Trimensional: 3D Scanner for iPhone[/ame]
With so many great photography apps already available for iOS, Trimensional is the first to offer 3D scanning capabilities. Trimensional sets itself apart by offering something not currently available in any other app and it’s a steal at only buck as well. It requires an iPhone 4 or 4th generation iPod Touch to work its magic because it uses the front facing camera to capture images.
So how does Trimensional pull this off, while other companies require more sophisticated technologies like advanced infrared depth sensors or LIDAR laser-scanners? This app takes a much simpler route to achieve 3D images. First, you have to be in a dark room and set the screen brightness to max. Then hold still and run the app. It will light up the screen and record the image on the front facing camera. Then it processes the image internally and outputs a cool 3D picture for you to enjoy.
For now, Trimensional cannot export 3D data, but I would imagine this will change in the not too distant future. As it stands now, this is more of a fun app that creates some really cool images, but not much more. Trimensional also produces some unexpected results at times, but for the most part, it is quite a remarkable app. Now all we need is an iPhone that has a 3D screen.

i personally think that this is a major advancement in terms of mobile technology and i love the "out of the box" ideas! i hope to see further development in this app!~ 240VOLTS ~

Very cool a unique and must have toy

I like the unique idea. Now to implement it in a useful way? humm how about making an avatar for a game or such.Yeah, you'll be the coolest person in the room when you pull one out and show it around, but that gets old fast when three other people have them and one person somehow has one that glows in the dark.

Seriously, we should all go out of our way to tell these devs (the ones that are responsible for apps like word lens, trimensional, etc) that they are appreciated for their additions to mobile tech. Don't get me wrong, I like angry birds as much as the next guy, but the devs in the jailbreak community and the "legit" devs (in apple's eyes) like this one are the guys who are attempting (and often succeeding) in advancing the mobile platform in directions most people (even Steve Jobs himself) couldn't even think of.
We need to encourage the risk takers, not shoot them down.

AGREED! Narrow minds lead to small thoughts :] Positive thoughts lead to big ideas...can't wait to try it!!

While this app is based on an interesting concept, it only "sort of" works, it will need a lot of work to make it "polished". I look forward to other developments from this entry.

I use 3D software to scan things at work to restore classic cars with parts that have been broken or corroded! Nextengine charges $2500 for their scanner and at $1 this is a steal even if it's just a toy to play with!

got it a few hours after release and this is obviously a rough release but imagine the possibility. Personally I get irked by the fct that scans of a human face always have those freakish "spikes" sticking out of the eyes from the light reflection from the screen but I can see how soon enough this will probably be a first way to put your own face on your avatars for XBox, Playstation Home (if it stays around much longer) or even as an add on for in game skinning so the guy getting fragged looks llke the actual player.
Huge potential here, slow start is all.

Can't find it in the APP Store

This is pretty slick. Advancements in computer vision are usually pretty cool, but anything that can push forward 3D scanning / printing is amazing!
(Also, when you see a lame comment from someone, check and see if it's their first post ever. If THAT post is why they signed up for this forum, you're probably safe permanently ignoring them.)

Darn, I have a 3G[s]. I don't see why this couldn't be used with the other camera, just use a flash light with the back camera in a dark room to capture the image. Awesome app though, just wish I could use it.

This is a good advancement, maybe in the future (far future) apple will use this to unlock ones iphones, instead of punching in 4 pin numbers why not use your own face to unlock your idevice!

(I didn't realize this until I tried it out myself)

Cool little toy and I'm sure it will improve vastly over time
I wish I had a miniature elephant that fit in the palm of my hand. I would pick him up and he'd lift up his trunk and stand on his back legs and say PRRRRRRRRRRRRMMMMMMMMMPPPPPPPPPHHHHHHHH and I would say yes little elephant i love you too.

i got this, it was good and stuff, but it isn't that great for telling which part is your face. Yes, it does work pretty well overall though.
