I've recently got a new iPod Touch 4G and using it has made me want another iPhone... so I was going to get a new iPhone 4 in the next couple of days and was hoping the problems had been sorted. I can't really find much info about whether they updated the hardware at the end of September like it was rumored that they would.

A phone that is powerful enough to do this and versatile enough to be a hybrid PC / Phone might prompt me to get one as least as a second line... still can't live without a jailbreak

I think people are confused and I want to clear something up. There are currently 4 generations of iPhones.
1st gen - Apple iPhone (2G network)
2nd gen - Apple iPhone 3G (3G referring to network, not generation)
3rd gen - Apple iPhone 3GS (upgraded processor ram etc)
All the above iPhones have the same form factor, these did not change until the:
4th gen - Apple iPhone 4
So my question is, why does everyone assume that Apple will change the form factor of the 5th gen iPhone? They didn't do it for the first 3 releases, so it's unlikely that they will again until perhaps the 6th or even 7th gen.
iPhone 7 anyone?
My guess is at least the 5th generation will keep the same form, they'll just upgrade the internals. Cross your fingers and perhaps in another 12 months they'll start thinking about a new look.
