Apple Fuels Speculation by Raising 1st Quarter iPhone Shipments

Apple has supposedly elevated its 1st quarter iPhone shipment goals by a substantial margin according to reports surfacing Monday morning. Initial estimates for 1st quarter 2011 iPhone shipments fell into the range of 19 million units. That already-teeming number has allegedly been upped by Apple to approximately 21 million.

Naturally, this situation begs the obvious question: What could possibly be driving the ballooning shipment goals of Apple for its popular iPhone, especially since the "newness" of the iPhone 4 has already worn thin? According to DigiTimes, the raised estimate reportedly includes somewhere between five and six million CDMA iPhones, fueling a long-standing rumor that need not be addressed further without any concrete evidence yet again.

The first-quarter shipment goal for WCDMA iPhones has been adjusted from 13 million units to 14-15 million units, the sources said. The shipment goal for CDMA iPhones, which will be launched in North America and Asia Pacific in the first quarter, is set at 5-6 million units, the sources added.

Still, it's a safe bet that the rumor mill will be churning at a breakneck pace during the next few weeks leading up to the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show. CES kicks off January 6th, 2011 at 8:30 am. Incredibly - or, perhaps, ironically - Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg will deliver a keynote address at this year's CES.

5-6 million CDMA phones dropped into the North American and Asian Pacific networks at one time. Ooooh, someone's networks are going to slow down big time when that happens. Oh, and the good news will be, if this is true, that the unlock issue will stop being such an... issue. Oh, wait, all those people who bought AT&T iPhones and use them on another carrier will still have those phones. So I guess we'll still be seeing posts about, "when's the unlock coming out?"

What's next, Apple saying, "oh, go ahead and jailbreak, we don't mind, we know it's legal so we will stop making it difficult to do so by messing with iTunes and basebands"?

Will all the fun go out of these forums when you can just buy a phone and do with it what you want? Probably not, Apple bashers and fanboys will still argue, and I would expect lots of posts about how the iPhone doesn't work well with Verizon and it's all Apple's fault.

I hope Sprint gets it along with Verizon but I doubt it so still no iPhone for me. I don't know why people care so much, Verizon is just as expensive as AT&T. If Apple was smart they would release a version for all 4 big carriers.

I agree, I wanna see how many jump on the Verizon bandwagon. Att network will greatly improve after this. Then Verizon will have more problems then Att ever did.
