Default Canadian Carrier Unlocking iPhones for Qualified Users

Reports have surfaced from Canada that many customers who have seen their service contracts expire are getting their iPhones unlocked by Canadian carrier Rogers Wireless. According to iPhone in Canada, the policy (which comes courtesy of Rogers sub-brand Fido) makes it possible for these "qualifying customers" to have their iPhones unlocked - but at a price of roughly $50 in addition to applicable taxes.

Canada, many will recall, joined both the UK and France on the short list of initial countries to offer for purchase the iPhone 4 SIM-free and unlocked.

The unlock service is available through the carrier's Customer Care team. To be eligible for unlocking, customers must (1) have an account in good standing (2) Have paid the un-subsidized / no term cost for the device at least 30 days prior OR have finished their Commitment Period (contract) (3) have a device which is listed in their equipment history. Fido warns, however, that Some features on the iPhone "might be compromised by the unlocking and could affect its performance on our network."

News of the carrier's new unlocking policy has generated so much attention across the blogosphere as of Wednesday morning that Canada's "other" Apple-related news was effectively bumped to a distant side-note. On Tuesday, the Canadian government announced that it has - at long last - officially approved the Canadian version of the iBookstore. Minister James Moore stated that "Apple has demonstrated how iBookstore Canada represents new opportunities for Canadian authors and publishers, and I have determined that this investment will be of net benefit to Canada."

I really never understood how it worked up there. You buy the Iphone unlocked so I suppose it gets locked as soon as you pick a carrier? I thought the phone would stay unlocked?

No, the unlocked iphone can only be bought from apple directly.
if the iphone is bought from a carrier at any price, subsidized or not, it is locked to that carrier..

Hmm its so weird cause here in Australia we get our iPhones unlocked for free by our carriers no matter how far into our contracts we are.

No. If you buy your iPhone at the Apple Store, you have to buy it outright for full price WITHOUT a carrier. That way it is unlocked and you can swap SIM cards at any time and go with whatever carrier you want.

If you buy it at an Apple Store for a specific carrier, it will be locked to that carrier ONLY.

If you are planning on buying an unlocked phone there and you get a SIM card from them, MAKE SURE they put the SIM card on a separate order, or else it will be LOCKED to that carrier.

It happened to me on launch day and I had to go back to get a new unlocked one that I paid for.

I'm probably gonna call up rogers and see if this is true. It's smart business cause people are gonna unlock them anyways, why not earn a profit on it

You can buy it unlocked for $700, or get it with a contract for $169 or $259, now you can get yours that's already has a contract unlocked

I'm assuming Apple gave Rogers the software or at least the underlying algorithm to unlock the BB. Apparently any BB can be unlocked with a code that is particular to that BB... I would guess that each BB has a specific ID number that is then input in to this algorithm and the unlock code is spit out... I doubt that apple changes that by country/region... Maybe someone from Rogers will leak the software so there will be no need for ultrsn0w for unlockers which can cause other issues, ie - battery problems, etc.(I'm personally ok with AT&T where I'm at!) Besides a a not-so-official, official unlock from what I assume could only be Cupertino would be the best! Especially if FW is preserved with PT!

Yes, that's correct. But if you buy your phone at the apple store, you'll be paying $659 + tax for a 16 gig for an unlocked iPhone.

Maybe this can shed some light on unlocking an iPhone:
factory unlocked" vs Carrier locked iPhones

So when you have it unlocked by the carrier, does it become a factory unlocked phone? So that upgrade firmware wont affect the unlock? I'd like to know how they are doing this, taking locked phones and permanently unlocking them. It would be a great tool for unlockers in countries like the US.
