"Backup Plan:" Untethered 4.2.1 JB Coming for All Devices
[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WVZ5MDPVHWU]YouTube - Untethered 4.2.1 JB on ipt4g[/ame]
A tweet from @MuscleNerd last night revealed a workaround he's done for an untethered jailbreak of iOS 4.2.1 on the fourth-gen iPod touch. Using saved SHSH blobs from 4.2 beta 3, the method doesn't use expose any of the known holes that are used in the current set of exploits: it's a "backup plan" to the userland method that @comex is working on.

@MuscleNerd's method can be generalized for use with all devices (including the Apple TV 2G) and is reusable for future jailbreaks. @comex's method is, he says, "more extensible" though.
No updates yet as to when this will be released, but we'll let you know as soon as we find out.

sweet, untethered for my iPad will be nice, but not a huge deal as i dont reboot or let the 10+ hour battery die hardly ever. But untethered is always nice. Thanks iPhone Dev team for delivering as usual!

I'm always glad to see good progress. I very much appreciate the hard work and dedication that all the jailbreakers put in to keep our firmwares updated and free from restrictions for all. Thank You guys.

Just when you think that there is no JB news, MuscleNerd comes up with the backup plan. Maybe JLo will promote it. (I know it's lame, but funny.)

I'm really looking forward to this. I appreciate all the work the JB community puts into making jailbreaks better all the time.
The 4.2.1 is the first tethered jailbreak I've used, it's pretty easy most of the time to plan on not rebooting your phone until you can tether it.
However, when I woke up yesterday my phone had apparently rebooted overnight and was stuck on the apple screen. Since I rely on NightStand to wake me up, it could have been a minor issue for me.
Thanks for all your work!
Doug

My "problem" starts on page 2 post #23 , thats where i started you can read everything i did in this thread.
just to remind you i started with a black screen dfu loop. so i had some of the worst things that can happen ^^
3GS stuck in recovery loop

Probably has an old bootrom 3GS. The process (for retaining baseband) on that one basically amounts to creating a custom firmware with pwnagetool (uncheck activate phone), restoring the custom firmware in pwned DFU mode and then running the latest Redsn0w when it finishes.
I'm surprised old bootrom 3GS iPhones have become so rare that people have begun to doubt their existence.

How did he get cydia to load so fast? Mine takes about 2 minutes usually
-

i have a new bootrom, as stated in the thread. please read carefully before making statements. and yeah the way youre describing was my way. and if you READ! carefully you can see that i NEVER saved SHSH for that particular phone so , if you READ you will see that i did NOT retain my baseband. i would have liked to but sometimes thats how things go.
which phone do you have ?? if you have a 3G its normal to load long. but theres a solution to speed it up.
go to categories-> edit , take out ALL the themes and sh*t you dont need and it will not update all the things in cydia AND will finally boot quicker.
Im always kinda pissed when i work on my GFs iPhone 3GS and cydia boots up in like 10seconds.Last edited by shitake83; 12-08-2010 at 09:44 AM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost
