Yes, it is perfectly okay to update and run the tethered jailbreak for now. The worst case scenario would be that you'd simply have to restore to a stock 4.1 or 4.2.1 and then rejailbreak it when the untethered option is released.
As far as what's worth it to jailbreak tethered, that's really up for you to decide. It isn't a huge deal, being tethered that is, especially if you're like me and tend to have your nearby the majority of the time. I have my iPad on the tethered jb and have mobile substrate based apps on it (that is what requires you to re jb after each boot) and so far I have not had to rejailbreak it at all other than when i've installed new cydia packages that require a reboot to finish installing. The only thing stopping me from doing it to my iPhone 4 is that i'm still on bb 1.59.0 and want to keep it unlockable simply for future resale value. As soon as there's a way to update to 4.2.1 while preserving the baseband I will update in a heartbeat, even if it's tethered.

I updated my iPhone 4 to 4.2.1 before I knew there was not an untethered JB out there, so I hope this is released soon!

Well here's a little story of little importance, but what the hell!
When I first had bought my 3G[S] last year during about September, I remember I was so pissed off because upon reading if it was an old bootrom or newer one. (I didn't even know 3G[S]'s had this 'new'/'old' bootrom fiasco going on, nor what a 'tethered jb' meant.)
Well, my 3G [S] all pointed to the fact that it was the new bootrom. (At that time, I thought if it was simply in the MCxxxx format meant it was a new bootrom) there wasn't much talk at the time of new bootroms, old ones, blah blah, and from reading posts with the same model, it all pointed to the fact that it was indeed the new one, I thought I was screwed.
To cut things short, I ended up taking the plunge, jailbroke it, found out it was the old bootrom, and this is what has made me love my 3G [S] even more. Never even knew it was so rare, but i'm very sure there are tons 'among' us.
I have my blobs saved from 3.1.2 onwards, but my BB still has been preserved to 5.11.07. The hardest part was probably figuring out how to update to 4.2.1 while preserving it, but all is good.iPhone 32GB 3GS - iOS 4.2.1 - BB: 5.11.07
iPhone 16GB 3G - 3.1.3 - BB: 4.28.08
