Some people say it's working after the bb update, but it's not reliable to determine whether they are accurately testing it or not.
Chances are though, whether someone else's GPS really is ok or not, if yours isn't working/working correctly then it's shot. You cant fix it regardless of what firmware you're on.

The next baseband that would heal the GPS would have to be one that exceeds 6.15.00 since you can't downgrade and can only upgrade basebands. The latest for 3GS is 5.16.xx, might be a while (if ever) that it exceeds 6.15.00. 3G is already done for at 4.2.1 so there's no chance for iPhone 3G users. But maybe for 3GS if the fw updates don't stop any time soon like it did for iPhone 3G.

Something tells me Apple is not going to come to the rescue on this either.

Well it's either downgrade the baseband or find the issue with why GPS broke. Either way it isnt an easy task as we have seen that no fix has come about yet. Everything including unlocks have come to a standstill... Might be some time before something new comes out. But hopefully that new thing if/when it comes out will be spectacular and permanent

I'd go so far as to suspect apple numbered the iPad BB at 06.15 specifically to ensure it stayed on that product and it is pretty darn obvious they know of the fluke that allowed it to be used on the 3G/3GS. Realistically 3GS support will end in the not too distant future due to limitations of the hardware, meanwhile apple has more than enough wiggle room for BB numbering - ie: they can go as far as 06.14. If they are at 05.16 now then they have at least 98 more versions, hundreds more if the third set of digits is considered. No sense waiting for an apple BB rescue. Only hope is if someone on the dev team has both a conscience and is extremely lucky and brilliant enough to develop either an unlockable BB clone in the original series or figures out how to patch in a previously unlockable BB. Alternatively they should also figure out how to reinsert the original BB for anyone who wishes to revert back to their previously locked status so they can get their gps back.

No.

You'd use ultrasn0w to unlock and no your gps won't come back. It is broken as long as the baseband has been upgraded to 6.15.00

Could it be fixed if a new baseband came out?

If a baseband with a higher version was released by Apple that would most likely fix it. But it would also relock the phone.

The BB in the latest beta is 04.11.08 and it's unlikely to change much so I wouldnt hold your breath.

That's the iPhone 4 baseband. Although I think the baseband for 3GS is still in the 15's so what you said is still correct.
