SpiritOfLogic, the devs behind iRealSMS and PwnTunes, now have a slick new tweak to the Photos app up on Cydia. PhotoAlbums+ allows you to create, manage and password-protect photo albums right on your jailbroken iDevice, without having to connect to iTunes, download them all, and manage them on your computer. The tweak uses familiar iOS screen elements and gestures and plays nice with any app that uses the Photos interface.

The tweak allows you to create new custom photo albums from inside the native Photos app, using a + button that now appears at the top of the Albums list. It works just like Photos in how it lets you choose which photos or videos to move out of the default Camera Roll album into the new custom albums, or move from one custom album to another. You just tap the thumbnails of the pictures you want to distribute, and tap 'Move' to file the photos on your iDevice however you want. Another nice addition is the ability to password-protect your album by clicking a lock that appears when you create a new album and specifying the password. To delete an album, swipe across the album in the listing, and all the photos in the album are moved back to the default Camera Roll album.

What's nice is that the tweak also works perfectly with other apps that hook into Photos in iOS, so when you want to upload pics to Facebook, for example, your albums will still be organized and password protected in exactly the same manner. PhotoAlbums+ is $2.99 from Cydia.

Got this from Cydia yesterday. It's everything I ever wanted from the stock Photos app. I'm astonished it's taken this long for something like this to come out. I paid for the tweak, but am so happy I might even donate some extra shillings to these fine folks. I think the price was $2.99, but it's totally worth it.

How does this affect/interact with your actual source for photos aka your PC/Mac? I'm assuming it can't make any changes there, correct?

To clarify it only manages images and videos from the camera roll. Any albums that you have synced via iTunes cannot be modified. The image structure is not the same as to where we can manipulate the images individually.
As far as images and videos that you have moved from camera roll into custom folders, the process is transparent to the PC/Mac, as it will not notice the modification so it will sync as normal as if all images were still part or camera roll.

That is really cool! Do purchases carry over from 3GS to iPhone 4 when I upgrade? Also... what I want to see is a plug-in that lets me delete songs from my playlist(s) on my iPhone exactly the same way I can delete pod casts.

Yes Tim,
Since it is a cydia store application, the purchase is linked to your cydia account. Cydia allows you to tether up to a certain amount of idevices to your account(I don't know how many) but in the event of a hardware upgrade you should be fine.

fixed it... some time ago I have modified the Cydia package.js file so I could get rid of the ads in Cydia.
Have undo the modification and all is working now .
