redsn0w 0.9.6beta5 Out - Tethered Jailbreak for 4.2.1 on Older Devices

redsn0w 0.9.6beta4 was just recently announced, and beta5 is now out giving both Windows and OSX users the ability to flash the iPad 06.15 baseband on iPhone3G or iPhone3GS. (why?).

This release jailbreaks iPhone3G, older iPhone3GS, and non-MC iPod touch 2G. It also assists 3G and 3G[S] users with baseband 05.14 or 05.15 who have been stuck without an unlock upgrade their baseband to 06.15 in order to use the new ultrasn0w which was just released. DO NOT DO THIS UNLESS YOU NEED TO. More on that here.

A much upgraded Cydia is also included in this release, which we'll be writing a full story on in the morning - a ton of great improvements thanks to saurik and chpwn.

The wait is over. Thanks Dev team and to all the members of this awesome forum. My Iphone 3G, 3GS and Ipod Touch 4 are now Jailbroken and unlocked. It was really worth the wait.

Whoever has the old bootrom and has preserved the BB, and would rather keep it that way instead of upgrading it to the iPad's 6.15.00 BB.

Give it a day or so, MuscleNerd tweeted the following:

If you have an old-bootrom 3GS with unlockable BB and just want to go to 4.2.1, we'll release an "unofficial" PT bundle

Just thought I'd post this up, so people with the older BB don't feel like they must update their BB in order to unlock on 4.2.1

Reason they didn't do this from the start was to get the ones that have the newer bootrom (which is more common) out of the way first.

Old bootrom users, our time will come soon enough! Hold out a little longer!

Ok I have a 3GS @4.1. It has 5.14 BB. Does it matter if it's old or new bootrom. I need the unlock so I am willing to flash it with the 6.15. But I need to know if it will be tethered or untethered.

On 4.2.1 it is tethered for all the devices except iPhone 3G, iPod touch MB model and old bootrom 3GS.

If you update to 4.1 then it will be untethered. If you go to 4.2.1 it will depend if you have a old or new bootrom 3GS.

Does the new updated redsn0w hacktivate? I am on 3GS old bootrom, currently unlocked by ultrasn0w. What is the easiest way to get to 4.2.1 fully hacktivated?

I was thinking: iTunes restore to 4.2.1 -> redsnow + updated bb -> ultrasnow.

But this requires redsn0w to hacktivate my phone since I do not have an AT&T sim around...

Or is there another path?

I have been lucky enough that from all the iphones that I have purchased, a lot of people left their old SIM card in it, so I have like 15 ATT SIMs at home LOL (besides the fact that I have ATT myself, but i4 uses micro sim, so I still use the old ones)
