Hmm, I'm unconvinced. OS portability is an issue too. What do you use for contacts and calendar on a windows machine with mobile me? Does it sync to outlook? Of course you'd be SOL if you wanted to switch to an android phone (or at least a painful export),
Seems to me gmail is a better option even if they were both free...

Not sure if anyone notices but if you go to add a mail account and select mobile me it will have a tab at the bottom that says "create free account." and then when you click it. It try to load then give is a splash screen "this feature is not currently supported". Would upload screen shots but it's not allowing me to so it from my phone with the mmi app.

I was an early-adopter of "mobile me," having had a dot-mac account since October, 2000. Apple has kept adding value to the way I use it, giving me the ability to share photos and files initially and now giving e the ability to keep my calendars and contacts everywhere -- on my iPad, my iPhone and my Mac. The first day I had my iPad, I had all of my Safari bookmarks in sync.
These are all done through the use of a Mobile Me account.
Now, mine is paid for and I have no idea what free accounts might include or not include, but this kind of cloud sync actions, if available for the range of Apple products, it would create a very compelling user experience, indeed. And that would be a real plus for Apple.
